Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A heavily worn and incomplete Bronze Age palstave axe head. Extensive surface loss has occurred along the edges and surfaces of the find, giving the axe and thin irregular form. The butt end is sub-square, and is slightly more truncated to one side. From the butt, the sides flare slightly. The side flanges are missing; however, the stop ridge is still prominently visible, especially on one side. From the stop ridge, the blade tapers slightly (due to surface loss) before flaring marginally to the cutting edge which is heavily truncated and rounded. A partial rib is visible on one face…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy heraldic horse harness pendant, dating to the medieval period (c. AD 1189-1399).  The pendant is in the shape of a square topped shield (Heater shield), with straight top and convex sides meeting at a point at the bottom that is broken to the left of the point. At the centre of the top edge projects an integral incomplete transverse loop. The face is decorated with enamelled heraldic design that consists of three lions passant on a background of gules (red). The enamel of the lions is lost. The reverse is plain and undecorated. …

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead weight. The weight is circular in form and engraved with ‘IIII’ on one face. The reverse has a single linear line running across the face but is otherwise plain. It has been suggested that leads weights incised with a form of number may represent the weight of the weight in ounces. If this example was meant to be four ounces, it is underweight at 3.6 ounces. Illegal lead weights are notoriously difficult to date as they bear no official mark.

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy rotary key. The key consists of a triangular bow, an oval in section solid stem, and a sub-rectangular bit with multiple wards and clefts projecting.  An incised X is visible on the stem as it tapers outwards at the bow. No direct comparable examples could be found. The key is too big to be identified as a casket key, and could therefore be suggested to have been a door key. While the key doesn’t fit stylistically with any compared examples, it can be suggested to be of late medieval to post medieval date.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount. The brooch is formed of a single plate of copper alloy in the shape of a Tudor rose. Raised floral decoration is present on the front face. On the reverse, aside from seeing the underside of the decoration, the mount is plain with no visible attachment points. Due to the thinness of the metal the mount has become slightly warped and has a number of voids on its surface, probably occurring post deposition. Based on comparable examples the find is likely Post Medieval (1650-1750) in date.

A blue glass bead with a slightly off central perforation. The bead is broadly bun / globular shaped and is light blue in colour. The bead has a decorative white stripe of glass within the matrix. Glass beads are common finds from the late Iron Age - Early Medieval period, however stylistically this form is likely to date from the late Iron Age or early Roman period. Dating beads visually is very difficult, however given similar beads are recorded as being of Iron Age to Roman date, this has been tentatively suggested for this find.

A lead bag seal of post medieval date. The object is sub-circular in plan and flat in section. A sub-rectangular tag protrudes from one side of the disc. In terms of decoration, both faces have the remains of a circular groove around the circumference and decoration in low relief, however due to the objects condition this is non-discernable. This particular example was likely used with a drawstring. This find is probably post medieval in date, likely 19-20th century.

A lead spindle whorl of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The object is bi-conical in plan with 9mm centeral perforation and is undecorated. Spindle whorls can be difficult to date, especially for undecorated versions. The size of the central perforation can be an indicator of date with larger perforations being indicative of an Early-Medieval to Post-Medieval date (Rogers 2007, 23-24). Lead spindle whorls also became more popular from the 13th century onwards, and it is therefore probable that this find dates from the medieval period, though it could be earlier. …
