A fragment of copper alloy brooch. The fragment is sub rectangular in section. The object curves at one end before widening slightly. Both ends of the fragment are truncated while the find has a dark patina. The find likely formed part of a brooch, potentially a bow brooch, although due to how heavily truncated the object is, it is not possible to identify a specific type to the find.

An incomplete Roman trumpet brooch. The brooch has a sub-oval flat head which has been truncated, an integral sub-circular loop may have been present beyond this truncation. The reverse would have had two perforated projections which would have held the spring, support bar and pin, however on this find these are missing, although evidence of their existence is present. The ‘D’ in cross section bow emerges from the front of the head and curves to a raised knee. The knee has decoration in the form of transversal ribs. From the knee, the brooch tapers and terminates …

A copper alloy bow brooch of Roman date. The bow head is sub-oval in form and there is no trace of a head loop. To either side of the head are two wings, one of the wings has been damaged, and both may be truncated. From the head, the bow, D in cross section, curves and tapers to a pointed knop. A dragonesque brooch of probable Roman date. The brooch is ‘S’ shaped in plan, presented as a two headed dragon. The heads both have protruding ears, curving snouts and decorated eyes. From the heads the brooch curves and expands into a wider body. The obverse is decorated with raised panel lines and enamel. The reverse of the find is undecorated but there is evidence of two attachment lugs located roughly centrally on the piece. The edges of the brooch are rough. This may be due to poor casting or potentially damage which has occurred to the object. …

An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch, or fibula, of probable Langton Down or bow type variant. These styles are associated with the period of the Claudian conquest, but had died out by the Flavian period, giving the brooch a likely date of the 1st century AD (Collingwood & Richmond 1969, 293). The spring mechanism and lower part of the bow, including the catch-plate, are missing, leaving only the upper bow and pin. The remaining section of the upper bow is longitudinally decorated, with the decoration tapering to the waist. The wings of the brooch are no longer present. The pi…

Copper alloy brooch. The design of the brooch is zoomorphic (resembling an animal) and it appears most closely resemble a mythical winged creature known as a Wyvern, popular in medieval society. Originally mounted using a pin, now lost, which ran the length of the brooch. The brooch is curved, with the design on the obverse. The head of the animal has a pointed ear and the head is angled downwards with an eye, nostril and mouth picked out in the design. A foreleg is depicted with a three clawed foot at the end. The wing of the animal helps form the spine of the brooch, and is linked t…

This example is broken on one side. The display face bears crescentic stamps grouped along parts of the wire frame. The seat for a hinged pin is retained on the back. This was probably made in a craft setting from scrap. Wire thickness 2.78mm.

Incomplete copper-alloy Roman 'Holden Hill' type brooch. The object is badly damaged and decayed, it is missing both wings, the catchplate and foot, the spring and pin. It is a mid-green colour all over with patches of mid brown probably due to soil staining. There is also possible iron oxide staining in the remnants of the spring 'cylinder'. The bow is comma shaped and the back of the head is decorated with two lines of closely arranged recessed dots which converge from the front of the wings and run partway along the back of the bow. The hole is 3.85mm in diameter. 13mm below this loop perforation, there is a further hole 3.88mm diameter through the head plate itself. A damaged and very badly decayed copper alloy trumpet brooch. The head is nearly circular with a slight lip visible around its edge. There is a hint of decoration on the upper surface of the bell of the 'trumpet' in the form of possible raised oval loops. The bow is short and circular in section. At its bottom end the bow thickens into a band of decoration which cannot be deciphered, possibly representing acanthus leaves which is common on similar examples. This band of decoration is separated above and possibly below by a single narrow groove in the bow. The foot currently is a very …

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch 'T' shaped in plan with a lozenge shaped bow narrowing to a blunt point. In profile the bow is arched and a pronounced 'comma' shape. It is 'D' shaped in section being very roughly flattened on the back. Two short wings project from either side of the bow head, round in section and narrowing towards their ends. Fragmentary catchplate from a copper alloy bow brooch found with a metal detector in the field to the north of Tan Llan, in January 2008.The catchplate is sub-triangular in shape with a curved edge to create housing for the pin.The surface is pitted and there is an apparent longitudinal line visible in the reverse – probably a result of the casting. It had been suggested to the finder that this may in fact be a brooch made from a Roman coin, and on this basis the NationalMuseum was contacted for an opinion.Experts at the NationalMuseum concluded that this was a catchplate rathe…
