Record ID: NCL-69D27B
Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast iron sphere, probably a post-medieval cannon ball. There is an indentation on one side. This may be a result of impact, but could also be the result of uneven corrosion processes. It weighs 877.94 g and has a diameter of 62.34 mm. There are clear signs of corrosion on the surface of the shot, which means it is difficult to precisely assign a calibre, but the diameter would fit a falconet or minion. Similar shot in the database include OXON-DA7DB8, WILT-FB42A2 and SWYOR-5EE135.

Object type: SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead hemp bale seal of the post-medieval period (AD1757). The object is a bi-face sub-discoid seal with a single central slot through its centre for the attachment string. One face bears [S]PB SRHB 1757 in three lines. SPB indicates that the bale contained hemp and SRHB is probably the initials of the grower, owner or agent and the type of hemp. On the opposing face has some indication of lettering, but it is no longer legible. Other bale seals of this type have 'No.' and an Arabic numeral. Lead bale seals, such as this example, were added to merchandise in ports by '…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-2350 BC). The lithic is sub-triangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface has three predominant negative scars and short stepped flaking and semi-abrupt retouch along both the left and right hand edges. The proximal and distal ends have been abruptly blunted. The ventral surface is slightly convex and has a small bulb of percussion situated at the distal end. The flake retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is grey in colour with cream inclusions throughout. Length: 15.45mm, Width: 18…

The dorsal surface has a minor amount of retained cortex along the proximal edge. The left and right hand edges have fine, semi-abrupt retouch. The distal end tapers to a slight point and the proximal end has been abruptly blunted. The ventral surface is slightly concave and has shallow ripples of percussion emanating from a small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end. A complete flint Scraper of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface has three predominant negative scars, and short, scaled flaking along the proximal edge. The left and right hand edges have semi-abrupt retouch. The proximal and distal ends have been abruptly blunted. The ventral surface is slightly concave due to a single large negative scar situated above a retained bulb of percussion along the proximal end. The flake retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is grey in colour wi…
