Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast iron sphere, probably a post-medieval cannon ball. There is an indentation on one side. This may be a result of impact, but could also be the result of uneven corrosion processes. It weighs 877.94 g and has a diameter of 62.34 mm. There are clear signs of corrosion on the surface of the shot, which means it is difficult to precisely assign a calibre, but the diameter would fit a falconet or minion. Similar shot in the database include OXON-DA7DB8, WILT-FB42A2 and SWYOR-5EE135.

A complete lead hemp bale seal of the post-medieval period (AD1757). The object is a bi-face sub-discoid seal with a single central slot through its centre for the attachment string. One face bears [S]PB SRHB 1757 in three lines. SPB indicates that the bale contained hemp and SRHB is probably the initials of the grower, owner or agent and the type of hemp. On the opposing face has some indication of lettering, but it is no longer legible. Other bale seals of this type have 'No.' and an Arabic numeral. Lead bale seals, such as this example, were added to merchandise in ports by '…

County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead shot ball of Post-Medieval date (AD 1640-1750). The object has a circumferentially running casting seam and a projecting casting spru. Around the casting spru is a large amount of iron corrosion and possibly a slightly projecting ferrous metal spike which passes centrally through the object. This object is probably part of an iron-stemmed dumb-bell shot, a modified form of ammunition for a smooth bore muzzle loading weapon. The weight of the shot suggests that it was meant to be fired from a pistol. The metal is grey in colour with a smooth patina and brown patches …

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead token dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1500 to 1850. The object is circular in plan and flat with a diameter of 24.86 mm. On one side of the object is a raised motif in the shape of an anchor. On the reverse of the object is a sexfoil motif which is again raised. Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be post-Medieval in date (1500-1850), those which …
