Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Scraper of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface has three predominant negative scars. The left and right hand edges have rough semi-abrupt retouch. The proximal end is composed of retained cortex and the distal end tapers and has been abruptly blunted. The ventral surface is concave and has shallow ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The flake retains a minor amount of cortex and is therefore a secondary flake. The flint is grey in colour with cream inclusions thro…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A group of two complete flint pieces of debitage of probable Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithics are sub-rectangular in plan and section. The dorsal surfaces both retain minor amount of cortex. Both left and right hand edges have a minor amount of semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surfaces have multiple small negative scars. The flakes retains a minor amount of cortex along the distal left hand edge and is therefore a secondary flake. The flint is light grey in colour with cream inclusions, the cortex is cream in colour Length: 20.01mm, Width: 9.19mm, Thickness: 5.53mm, W…

A complete flint Core Rejuvenation Flake of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface has three predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises and retained cortex along the left hand edge. The right hand edge forms a projecting spur, caused by hinged flake removal. The proximal end tapers inward while the distal end is a flat, partial striking platform. Ventral surface is slightly concave. The flake retains a minor amount of cortex along the dorsal surface left hand edge and is therefore a secondary fla…

County: Gateshead
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Notched Scraper of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithic is L shaped in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface has large, covering, scaled flaking and a distinct notch aspect in the left hand edge. The left and right hand edges, to either side of the notched aspect, have rough semi/abrupt retouch. The outer left and right hand edges have some semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly convex due to a large bulb of percussion situated at the proximal left right hand side. The bulb has partial, shallow, parallel flaking across its right hand…

A complete flint scraper of Mesolithic date (9000-3450BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concaveo-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains 4 predominant negative scars with corresponding arises. The distal, right and left hand edges show short, parallel, semi abrupt retouch. The proximal end has been abruptly blunted. The ventral surface is concave and predominantly smooth with percussion ripples emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is a cream in colour with lighter inclusions throughout. Dim…

A group of 2 flint microliths of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The lithics are sub-triangular in plan and plano-convex in section. Lithic no. 1 retains a small amount of cortex on the dorsal and is therefore a secondary flake. Lithic no. 2 retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flakes are a dark grey in colour. The cortex is a light grey. Dimensions: No. 1: Length- 4.06mm, Width- 2.23mm, Thickness- 1.08mm, Weight- 0.1g No. 2: Length- 2.71mm, Width- 2.43mm, Thickness- 1.02mm, Weight- <0.1g
