A piece of flint which is probably not worked and natural. The flint is very broadly speaking arrowhead shaped, but this is most likely to be a result of natural processes rather than human intervention. The flint does not show clear evidence for deliberate retouch on any of its edges, and the uneven patina on parts of the flint suggests that damage to the some areas occurred more recently than others. Although the flint resembles an arrowhead, it does not fit into any recognised typology for Neolithic or Bronze Age arrowheads and in any case seems to large. A number of archaeologists …

A fragment of fire-cracked stone or possible 'pot boiler' of unknown exact date. The fragment is roughly pyramidal in shape with a thick and two thinner layers of quartzite between a hard, reddish, fine-grained stone. The thick quartzite layer shows clear cracking caused by heat.  It is possible this stone was used in the heating of large quantities of water or was in the formation of a hearth. The stone has been found in an area with lithic implements and ceramic vessels dating to the Mesolithic to Medieval periods, thus a similar date has been applied.  The o…

A wheel-thrown base (and side) sherd of probable Mancetter-Hartshill mortaria (54mm x 56mm with a thickness of 11.5mm at the edge of the base; weight: 45.79g). The sherd has a fine-textured and powdery fabric with an off-white core and inclusions of fine quartz and occasional red-brown and white particles grit. The grit seems to be fairly worn which may indicate that the vessel was used to a fair extent. This type of mortaria has its main source at Mancetter and Hartshill on the Warwickshire/ Leicestershire border, where many kilns have been recorded and excavated. Unfortunately, wi…
