Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint tool of prehistoric date, probably Neolithic, and probably a knife. The tool appears to have been formed from an irregular waste piece. There is evidence for slight retouch along one sharp edge, and this was probably used as a slicing blade. The flint has a pale grey patina.

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A stone axe dating from the Neolithic period. The axe has been ground from a fine grained igneous greenstone, probably from a volcanic ash deposit. The patina of the surface of the axe is a green/grey, whilst damage shows a dark grey interior. The surface of the axe is quite badly scuffed, chipped and scarred in places, probably a result of plough damage. The axe measures 305.55 mm long, and is 51.12 wide at its widest, tapering to 25 mm wide at the haft end. It is 32 mm thick at its thickest and weighs 29.07 grams. There are clear facets on either edge. The axehead would have been haf…

A knapped flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating from the late Neolithic to the Middle Bronze Age. Mass: 1.2g. Length: 22mm; extant width: 18mm. Thickness: 4mm. The off-white/grey flint arrowhead is sub-triangular in plan, with two notches in the basal area either side of a central tang, forming a barb to one side, but the second barb is missing. The arrowhead has invasive retouch on the dorsal face. The flatter ventral face only has retouch on the tip and the barb and notches in the basal area. In "Guide to the Identification, Assessment and Recording of Lithics", Bond (2004, p.205)…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Knapped flint barbed and tange arrowhead. Probably Late Neolithic to the Middle Bronze Age. Mass: 1.5g. Length: 26mm; extant width: 17mm. Thickness: 4mm. Grey patinated flint. Made on a re-used flake, as the surface is not patinated around the edges where it has been retouched. The tanged arrowhead appears to have lost some material from its tip, and also at the ends of the wings - and so the original form is unclear.

An incomplete polished stone axe, dating to the Neolithic period ( length: 75.3mm; width: 37.9mm; thickness: 21.1mm; weight: 82.06g). This finely grained stone could be sandstone or siltstone, as it also has a soft texture. An unfinished roughout for a flint axehead, dating to the Neolithic period. The wedge shaped roughout has been bifacially flaked around its edges and some flaking has been undertaken further into the body of the flint. The butt is still very thick and the roughout seems to have been abandoned before this part of the axe was refined. Much cortex remains on both faces and on the butt and sides of the roughout. It is not immediately clear why the axehead was abandoned before it was finished, although as the butt is still very thick it may be that the desired shape for the axehead was simp…

There is a eraillure scar and possible radial scars just below the striking platform and by the bulb. There seems to further working done at the bottom right handside, which may indicate this flint was used as a scraper. Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint broken blade of probable Mesolithic or Neolithic date. The flint is brown in colour with an area of cortex on the left side, just before the break. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible on the ventral face at the proximal end of the flint. There is fine retouch, predominantly applied from the ventral face on the right edge of the flint. The fairly even patina of the flint suggests that the break is ancient rather than recent. The flint may have been used as a cutting blade. It probably ranges in date from 8300 to circa 3000 BC.
