Object type: KILN FURNITURE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A roughly hand made circular ceramic piece of kiln furniture or 'spacer' (diameter: 60.9mm; thickness: 15.2mm; weight: 53.85g). This 'spacer' would have been used to fill or plug any gaps in the kiln during the firing process. There are some areas of light brown glaze that have run down the sides of the piece, presumably from the glazed vessels above or to the side. There are two clear finger marks on the smoother surface of the piece. This piece of kiln furniture or 'spacer' probably dates to the late 16th - early 18th century. This find was found with record…

A small piece of kiln furniture or 'spacer', sub circular in shape (40.8mm x 39.2mm; thickness: 12.1mm; weight:23.76g). This piece would have been used to fill or plug any spaces in the kiln, and would have had glazed material on top and around it, hence the glazing down the sides of the 'spacer'. There is more than one definite edge, with one broken edge, as well as the probable remains of a fingerprint on one of the surfaces. This 'spacer' dates between the late 16th - early 18th century. Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric flint object, possibly a hammerstone for working other flint artefacts. There is an area of cortex on the top of the object, and many negative flake removal scars and evidence for percussion blows all over the rest of the flint. As many of the flake removals are very small, it is possible that this piece was used to knap and/or apply pressure to other flint tools during retouch of them. Other worked tools and a Neolithic ground axe have been recovered from the same area.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint waste flake of prehistoric date, probably Neolithic or Bronze Age, and dating from circa 4500 BC - 1000 BC. The flake is cortical in small areas at the butt and the tip of the distal end, and it has no obvious shape for a tool. However, what appears to be deliberately fine retouch at the distal end may have enabled the flake to be used as a knife and this is a distinct possibility. It measures 50.06 mm long, 20.62 mm wide, 5.15 mm thick and weighs 6 grams. The flint is pale to dark grey in colour with small areas of cream cortex.
