A small fragment of pale blue/turquoise glass, probably from a glass vessel. As the piece is very small it is difficult to determine the form of the vessel from which it came, making dating problematic. However, the colour of the glass may suggest a late post-medieval to modern date.

Two wheel thrown rim sherds of Roman grey ware (thickness ranging from 10.7mm - 15.8mm; collective weight: 41.96g). Both sherds would have originally been part of different shaped vessels. One of the sherds seems to represent a gritty thick straight-sided vessel with small frequent inclusions. The sherd has a slight lip protruding outwards and inwards at the rim, while the other sherd has a smooth curved structure with a significant lip protruding outwards at the rim and expanding outwards below the neck and may represent a small rounded probable bowl. Both sherds have patches of o…

Two ceramic wheel-thrown rim sherds, dating to the Roman period, probably from the 2nd-4th century AD (thickness ranging from 9.9mm - 10.2mm; collective weight: 22.26g). On the dark brown/ beige sherd, the hard-fired fabric has a gritty surface with frequent small inclusions as well as a small area of original burnishing on the outside. The other sherd has an off-white outer surface with a light grey/ blue fill. This sherd has not been fired as extensively as the other, but it also has a gritty fabric with frequent small inclusions.

A ceramic wheel-thrown rim and neck sherd, probably dating to the Medieval period (49mm x 40.3mm; thickness: 12.9mm; weight: 21.76g). This unglazed beige sherd has a very gritty and hard-fired fabric with a particularly sandy and micaceous surface. The sherd’s thickness deceases as the sherd continues down to what would have been the main body of the vessel. The sherd is in a slightly worn but fair condition.

A ceramic wheel-thrown handle sherd of possible Midlands Purple Ware, probably dating to the 17th century AD (length: 34.4mm; width: 50.1mm; thickness: 23.2mm; weight: 33.64g). A very hard-fired earthenware, the fabric has a dark red/ brown colour with the remains of a dark red/ brown glaze on the outside of the sherd. Midlands Purple Ware does originate in the 15th/ 16th century, but production waste is known from the 16th/ 17th century, continuing into the early 18th century. Specific forms include jars, dishes, bowls and cisterns. Production centres for this ware are distributed…

A small wheel thrown base and side sherd of Blackware (height: 43mm; diameter of base: 43.6mm; thickness: 5.3mm; weight: 21.79g). Probably originally in the form of a small cup with multiple handles, this is a poor quality sherd which has been reasonably well-fired due to blistering near the base. The fabric is rather hard and reddish-grey in colour and have been glazed inside and out with the lead glaze probably drawing iron from the body. These vessels would have probably been fired inside a pancheon or harder vessel in order to withstand the high temperatures. This sherd dates f…

A small sherd of late Iron Age pottery (35mm x 41mm; thickness: 8.5mm; weight: 14.00g). A fairly smooth, hard and thick probable sand-tempered fabric with large inclusions throughout and protruding out of the surface. The sherd is a light brown/ red colourwhile the inner surface is almost black in places. This sherd is very similar to examples found during excavations at Gussage All Saints in Dorset, particularly the type classified as Fabric A/C (Wainwright, 1979, pages 49-51). From these other examples, this sherd may have come from a bead rim vessel or flat rimmed barrel jar. …

A small sherd of Iron Age pottery (28.5mm x 27mm, thickness: 9.5mm; weight: 5.54g). A hard and fairly thick probable sand-tempered fabric with a smooth fracture and a small even distribution of quartzite throughout. The outer and interior surfaces are fairly rough and a dark grey, black colour. This sherd is very similar to examples found during excavations at Gussage All Saints in Dorset that have been classed as Fabric A/B. From these other examples, we could suggest that this sherd may have come from a bead rim vessel or a flat rimmed barrel jar. In general, these vessels were…

A wheel-thrown base (and side) sherd of probable Mancetter-Hartshill mortaria (54mm x 56mm with a thickness of 11.5mm at the edge of the base; weight: 45.79g). The sherd has a fine-textured and powdery fabric with an off-white core and inclusions of fine quartz and occasional red-brown and white particles grit. The grit seems to be fairly worn which may indicate that the vessel was used to a fair extent. This type of mortaria has its main source at Mancetter and Hartshill on the Warwickshire/ Leicestershire border, where many kilns have been recorded and excavated. Unfortunately, wi…
