A large and fairly well preserved wrought iron axe head of probable medieval date, almost certainly a woodman's axe. Iron axes are notoriously difficult to date when discovered outside of a dated archaeological context as the general form of axes has continued from at least as early as the Roman period (Manning 1976, 3). However, it has been suggested that as a general rule medieval axes are larger than those of earlier date, and normally had a simple socket, lacking the projecting hammer-end seen in many Roman examples (Ward-Perkins 1940, 56). Stone flake, possibly from a Neolithic polished stone axe. Mass: 4g, length: 30mm, width: 22mm, thickness: 6mm. Off white grey ?chert. The flake has a curved surface on c. 20% of the dorsal face, which has a smooth, lustrous appearance which may have been polished. There are also negative flake scars on the dorsal face. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture.
