Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A wrought iron medieval arrowhead of 'spearpoint' type. The corroded arrowhead has a circular socket which is damaged but when complete would have measured approximately 10.5 mm in diameter. Object type: AXE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large and fairly well preserved wrought iron axe head of probable medieval date, almost certainly a woodman's axe. Iron axes are notoriously difficult to date when discovered outside of a dated archaeological context as the general form of axes has continued from at least as early as the Roman period (Manning 1976, 3). However, it has been suggested that as a general rule medieval axes are larger than those of earlier date, and normally had a simple socket, lacking the projecting hammer-end seen in many Roman examples (Ward-Perkins 1940, 56). This example has a blade which is almost…

A ceramic wheel-thrown rim and neck sherd, probably dating to the Medieval period (49mm x 40.3mm; thickness: 12.9mm; weight: 21.76g). This unglazed beige sherd has a very gritty and hard-fired fabric with a particularly sandy and micaceous surface. The sherd’s thickness deceases as the sherd continues down to what would have been the main body of the vessel. The sherd is in a slightly worn but fair condition.
