A hoard of three items dating to the Taunton phase (c.1400-1275 BC) of the Middle Bronze Age and found buried together: A complete cast bronze rapier, 535mm in total length, with a solid copper alloy hilt which has been modelled in imitation of a wooden one. The rapier has been broken into three pieces. The tapering blade is 60mm wide at the handle and a maximum of 7.5mm thick with a "triple arris" shaped cross-section throughout its length. It is broken in two fragments, the larger, which is slightly bent, weighing 188g and the smaller, 23.34g.…

Items from an Iron Age crouched inhumation: A copper alloy vessel with handle, a pottery vessel, two copper alloy brooches and an iron implement Grave assemblage: 1] A copper alloy vessel with ornate handle. In excavation the vessel was observed to comprise two layers of horizontally ridged copper alloy sheet. Adjacent to it was the probably handle in two pieces. The handle consists of a rectangular copper alloy bar, which constricts into right-angled ends which then expand into right-angled, squared escutcheons. The handle is decorated with longitudinal grooves on the main body and…

"Several coins of the House of Theodosius" found in the fills of oven 4 in Building 1 in the Somerleigh Court excavations of 1969-1970. This assemblage (of unknown number) has been treated separately from hoard IARCH-D61D2D ((Robertson 2000, 410 no. 1644) coins from the rubble layer of the same building) although in the publication of that hoard by Cooke (2007, 7) he has treated them as one hoard: "However, using the published coin list (Patrick Greene 1993, 93), it is possible to suggest the likely composition of this hoard. In order to do this, only coins recovered from rubble conte…

Hoard of 36 coins (31 bronze and 6 silver) "from 76 BC to AD 180 or 270" found during Pitt Rivers' excavations at the settlement site of Woodcutts, Sixpenny Handley. Said to have been found with the remains of a bronze-mounted casket near a hearth, possibly within a house. "... the discovery here, within an oblong area of ' depression ' and near a hearth, of the remains of a bronze-mounted ornamental casket, with glass, a silver spoon, a penannular brooch, etc., and 31 bronze and 6 silver coins, from Claudius I to Claudius II (268-70)". De Jersey (2015) writes: "Initial publication (Haselgrove 1984, 136) recorded several silver and bronze coins found near Dorchester in 1982. In fact the coins had been handed in to the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth, in October 1980, and were said to have been found at a depth of c.75 cm "buried beneath a flat stone" (BMHF). There are persistent suggestions in the published and unpublished reports of the find that a) it was much larger than the declared portion, and b) it was found somewhere other than the given location. A large quantity of Roman bronze - up to 200 coins, mostly o…

29 3rd-century coins of Gallienus, Victorinus, Tetricus I & II. Scattered along the bottom of an internal drain in building 2170. Dated by the excavators to AD 290, presumably on the basis of the barbarous radiate, though this could be earlier (listed as "reverse Pax" by Reece in Woodward et al. 116). Woodward et al. 1993. Excavations at Greyhound Yard, Dorchester 1981-4. DNHAS Mono. 12, pp. 62, 82, 116, figs 23, 30, plate 30. Building 2170

20 coins from Constantine I to House of Valentinian. Found at Methodist Chapel on Durngate Street near Greyhound Yard excavs - attributed to Period 16 (19th C.), so possibly redeposited/ residual in later footings? Not mentioned in main text - only in Reece's coin report (in Woodward et al. 2003 p.116), but he classes it as a hoard. Woodward et al. 1993. Excavations at Greyhound Yard, Dorchester 1981-4. Hoard from the excavated Town House at Colliton Park, Dorchester (excavated 1937-8 and published in Durham and Fulford 2014, 59). Nine coins were found near the East door of room 13, building 182. However in revaluation (ibid) these were thought to be a residual scatter. In his report, Reece (same volume p.103) notes the presence of this hoard and 5 others identified by Mark Corney (two first to third century and three Theodosian). However his report does not attribute these hoard coins to particular hoards and they are therefore difficult to reconstruct. The latest coin in this ho…

De Jersey (2015) notes: "One hundred and sixty staters were found within a "restricted area" of a single field, near a fording point across the River Brit (BMHF; TAR 2003, 151 no. 352 (2003 T242)). The coins are nominally described as base silver, although some might more accurately be described as bronze. Many are in poor condition, and coupled with the relatively poor record photographs, it is likely that there may be more variation within the group that is first apparent. There are for example certainly some coins with the "two-branched" representation of the hair on the obverse (c…

De Jersey (2015) writes: "A scattered hoard of Durotrigan coinage, mostly rather poorly recorded, recovered over several years. Haselgrove (1989, 49) noted that "There may be additional coins from here", and three possible candidates in the CCI are listed below. The alloy of some of the Durotrigan material is uncertain and thus the division into silver and bronze staters should be treated with some caution."

De Jersey (2015) writes: "Allen (1960a, 176) records three Chute (British B) staters from Blandford; on the CCI card for 67.0351 he is quoted as saying that it "clearly comes from a hoard" with the two other Chute staters and, apparently, a Gallo-Belgic E stater - although Blandford is not recorded as a findspot for the latter type in Origins, and a likely candidate for identification as the Gallo-Belgic E in question (Salisbury Museum, ex Pitt-Rivers coll., ex Durden coll.) is unprovenanced in SCBI 24, no. 888. A few years later, Allen (1968b, 151) listed only two of the Chute stater…

De Jersey (2015) records: "Several poorly-recorded finds made over a period of fourteen years or more. The earliest discoveries seem to be those reported by Keen (1987, 124), made by Mr and Mrs House in October 1986: five silver staters, one silver quarter stater and eleven struck bronze staters, all of the Durotriges. They were found within an area of approximately 50 m2, apparently with two small silver ingots. In March 1987 another silver stater was found in the same area. Keen (ibid.) records a further four staters found "in the vicinity", in November 1987, by Mr B. Dillon; the e…

De Jersey (2015) writes: One hundred and forty-two coins were recovered from an area of approximately two square metres during a metal detecting rally in early September 2004. Two other coins were found "a few yards" away (TAR 2004, 169 no. 418; BMHF 2004 T347). The 144 coins thus declared included two Roman bronzes of the third century AD which were regarded as unassociated with the hoard. In addition to the coins, two copper alloy fragments, an iron object, three flints and 23 pottery sherds were reported. The pottery included three handmade Iron Age sherds, black burnished ware an…
