A fragment of gold strip or bar with a flared terminal. The strip has been coiled with the terminal on the inside. The strip is rectangular in cross section. At one end is a flared, flat-ended, terminal (approximately 4.5 mm thick) which is oval in cross section. At the other the strip has a deliberate angled cut. The strip is flattened from the terminal and expands in width to the cut end. The sides have been raised to create low flanges. This is slightly more prominent along the edges of one face (the outer face of the coil) than the other. The strip is 1.4 mm thick at the ridge…

A Middle to Late Bronze Age palstave axehead of Transitional or Late type, dating to the Penard or Wilburton phase (MBA III to LBA I; 1100 - 900 BC). The stop ridge is almost halfway between cutting edge and butt end (giving a long butt end) and both faces feature a high stop ridge and prominent central mid-rib, the face angled to either side. The butt end has rounded corners, perhaps through damage, and the flanges though damaged at their beginning do not begin for circa half the length of the butt end. Just above the stop ridge, the depth between ridge and face of the butt end is 1…

Object type: ANVIL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Bronze anvils like this were first produced in the later Middle Bronze Age (Ehrenberg 1981). This particular anvil is known as a 'complex anvil' in that it has a working face, a punching hole, a beak and a lengthy swage (apparently for forcing a sheet into premade shapes)--Although in this instance the swage looks almost like it could be hammered into a wooden base. Each feature is for working metal in a different way. BA anvils are typically small and were likely for working smaller items of copper alloy and precious metals. The composition of this anvil (a high tin bronze) would mak…
