An incomplete copper-alloy signet finger ring.
The ring has a large oval bezel decorated with an incised design for impressing into wax seals. Most of the band is missing, but what remains is narrow and oval sectioned. The bezel is much wider than the band and is decorated with a double shield design of a harp (on the left) and a plain cross (on the right) surrounded by a framing groove. When the impression was made this would have produced a design similar to those used during the English Commomwealth: i.e. a harp and the cross of St George. It is therefore likely that this ring da…

The bezel and part of the hoop of a cast copper alloy signet ring of probable early post-medieval date. The surviving fragment measures 24.27mm in length and weighs 6.21mm. The hoop is 6.59mm wide and 2.42mm thick and the oval bezel measures 15.35mm by 10.3mm. The hoop's cross section is D-shaped (concave exterior and flat interior). There are traces of silvering or tinning on the bezel. The design on the bezel is quite unclear but appears to be a crowned initial, possibly an 'R' or 'K', within an oval border.

A cast copper alloy finger ring, with a thin D-shaped section. The ring has a large oval bezel which measures 10.4mm x 7.5mm. The bezel has been engraved with an incised design. The design appears to depict a letter V inside a border. Either side of the bezel there are two moulded collars. There are no other markings on the exterior of the finger ring. The copper alloy is otherwise a dark reddish-brown colour.
Ralph Jackson (curator of the Romano-British Collections at the British Museum) believes rings of this type are probably Roman in date. He states: "although it is difficult to…

Complete post-medieval copper alloy signet ring. The ring weighs 6.02g, has an external diameter of 25.52mm and an internal diameter of 21.90mm. The hoop is 2.82mm wide and 1.86mm thick. The bezel of the ring is oval in shape, being 17.48mm long and 8.98mm wide and is integral to the ring, not cast separately. It is crudely decorated with a grooved line border, within which is the letter W. The letter W reads correctly both ways, but had this been another letter, it would have been shown in negative, so as to appear the right way round once impressed into wax. Normally we would expect …
