Object type: TONGS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete small cast copper-alloy object, thought to be the stem and terminal of tongs used for sugar or similar foodstuffs, of post-medieval date (c.1600-1900). The terminal is broadly semicircular in plan with a gradual curve towards the stem of the handle and has a shallow circular dishing within the bowl's upper surface. The stem is twisted to give a rope effect; it is sub-circular in cross-section. The object has a dark grey patina consistent with a probable post-medieval date. An incomplete cast copper-alloy front plate from a padlock of post-medieval date. It is circular in form with two protruding lugs at the top. The bar or mechanism was made of iron given the orange corrosion product found on one side of the plate. Arranged longitudinally down the centre of both faces is an incised rectangular section. This is divided into three squares with incised double linear borders and incised crosses. This is the front plate as the central panel of the three is replaced by a keyhole, made from two conjoined punched circles. This padlock is similar to a number on t…

A damaged and incomplete Late Iron Age/Early Roman cast copper-alloy strip bow brooch. The brooch is broadly triangular in form. The head is the widest point (11.2mm) and features a central removal (pin slot) and slight protrusion on one side; it is broken on the other. Below this the brooch is 9.0mm wide and tapers gradually down the length of the brooch to less than 3mm at the catch-plate end. The head is not curled round; it is uncertain as to whether the brooch has suffered flattening or a loss here. The bow is bent downwards on one side and generally lacks the arching of bow broo…

A circular domed convex object cast in copper alloy of probable post-medieval date. The artefact has a globular knop at its summit. From this emanate five curved ridges delineated by grooves emulating a star pattern. There is a groove around the circumference of the upper surface at the base. At one point on the circumference of the base is a vestigial rectangular protrusion suggesting that this object would have once been part of a larger item. The piece has corroded to a dusty light/mid-green colour.

A corroded, partial, small copper-alloy gilded buckle plate of medieval date (12th to 13th century AD). The surviving plate is sub-rectangular in form and would have been of folded sheet construction. The upper surface is decorated with a raised lion passant guardant with head turned backwards within a frame; the tail curves round on itself. The field in which this sits has been stippled using small punching and then gilded, the punching presumably to help reflect light. There are two perforations towards the corners of the attachment end; one rivet survives in situ. The artefact has …
