A leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel such as a cauldron or skillet, of medieval or post-medieval date. The leg measures 46.1mm by 22.1mm by 11.5mm and weighs 52g. The cross-section is D-shaped, with a flat undecorated back and a curving front. The D-shaped base is slightly rounded and at a near right-angle to the rest of the leg. From the base the leg narrows gradually but widens again briefly after about 20mm. Alove and below the wider section there are five linear vertical grooves which are equally spaced around the curving front. This leg would have been one of three on the…

Small fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid 1st to 2nd century AD. The fragment consists of a portion of the small base upon which the vessel would have stood, along with part of the base itself. Given the small size of the fragment it is difficult to determine what kind of vessel it came from. The fabric of the vessel is mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip.

Small decorated fragment of the body of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid 1st to 2nd century AD. The decoration consists of a central raised band, with a raised line of dots on either side. Either side of this are a series of dotted, dashed and straight lines, which would have formed part of a larger pattern. The shallow curve of the fragment suggests it probably once belonged to a bowl or similar vessel, but the form of this is difficult to determine. The fabric is mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip.

Fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture. Around a quarter of the base of the vessel survives, this rises slightly towards the centre of the upper face. On what would have been the inside of the vessel are what appears to be the letter M or W - the makers mark. There may have been other letters, though these are now illegible. The small size of the fragment makes it had to determine the shape of the original vessel. However, given its shape it may possibly belong to a plate or dish of Dragendorff form 15 to 31, dating to the mid 1st to m…

Small decorated fragment of the body of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid first to second century AD. The decoration consists of a raised curve, with a smaller curve above it to the right, followed by a strip containing an ovolo design above this. Post Medieval cast copper alloy pot foot and part of the leg. The leg is D shaped in section with a flat back; it is broken off just above a transverse collar with an old break. The foot is also D shaped in section with five moulded 'toes' running down the front giving a scalloped lower edge and a flat back. The base of the foot is flat and would mean the leg sat at c.80 degrees to vertical. It is 39.5mm long, 22.4mm wide and 16.6mm thick; it weighs 41.74 grams.
Cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler et al (2009:4) sugges…

A pottery rim sherd of probable medieval date. The fabric has well sorted quartz/sand inclusions, with no evidence of glazing. The construction of this vessel is wheel thrown, with a slight groove to the rim, possibly to accept a lid. The rim flares outwards, which suggests a storage jar shape. There is no evidence of reduction within the fabric,so an oxidized firing is likely. The fabric has a buff colour throughout. Dimensions are: Width 39.9 mm Height 21.9 mm Thickness at rim 8.5 mm Thickness at base of rim 4.5 mm. Weight 9.047 grams.

A Rim sherd from a domestic vessel. The rim is flat topped and is sub-rectangular in plan, with the wall of the vessel curving inwards. The lead glaze has a mottled black/brown colour with a good gloss which suggests an oxidized firing. The fabric is tempered with sand which is finely sorted, with only slight reduction to the core of the fabric. The rim has been compressed during the throwing process and has a low porosity which suggests a near vitrification point has been reached. Possibly from Verwood. Late 17th to mid 18th century.

A earthenware rim sherd of a probable platter of 17th to early 18th century date and possibly a Verwood piece. The Fabric is buff in colour and has been tempered with fine sand/quartz. The rim is sub triangular with the top angled outwards. The base has an offset foot ring of which there is a potter's finger impression. The olive green lead glaze has been enriched with iron and possibly manganese staining which has run towards the rim. This indicates a rim-to-rim stacking within the kiln. Dimensions are; Length 57.5 mm Height 34.1mm. Thickness 15.9 mm. Weight 30 grams.
