Treasure case 2009 T399 Description: Silver whistle, made of thin silver sheet, well-shaped mouthpiece, square opening, tapering to the end which has been broken off. Along the length of the whistle, five projecting flanges, in silver, these with traces of gilding. An incomplete cast copper alloy whistle of post-medieval date. The whistle is sub T-shaped in plan with a hollow, circular section. One terminal is cast in the design of an exotic bird while the other has been lost to an old break. The object is possibly a hawking whistle. The metal has a mid reddish-brown patina and is worn. The whistle is 67.7mm long, 33.9mm wide, 9.2mm thick and weighs 30.9g. Similar whistles can be seen on the PAS database as Unique ID: KENT3333 and BUC-8600D2.

This is the lower part of the whistle and tapers to a rounded suspension loop with a circular aperture. Before the loop there are two rounded collars.The fragment has been cut at the break and is also split partway along. A fragment of a silver whistle that comprises part of its tube, collar and attachment loops. The tubular whistle is made of silver sheet rolled into a cylinder and soldered lengthways along an abutting seam. One end of this tube terminates in an irregular break that has been squashed closed. The opposite terminal is also broken, slightly squashed and filled with a concreted grey material.
