A broken and incomplete stone spindle whorl. A carved sub-circular, bi-conical piece of fine grained sedimentary rock. One face is slightly more domed than the other. There is an off-centre drilled hole for attachment to a spindle. The hole has been drilled out from both sides, producing an hour-glass profile. A lead spindle whorl of indeterminate date. The object is at the upper end of the distribution curve for the normal weight of spindle whorls at 29g. This may suggest that it was used for spinning relatively fine yarn (Wild, 1988, 25). The approximate bun shape of the whorl is known from the Bronze Age to the Medieval period. The diameter is 24.81mm. Spindle Whorls made from lead are relatively rare and might suggest a date of between the Roman and Medieval periods.

A chalk spindle whorl of unknown date. The spindle whorl is slightly irregular, but is circular in plan, with a diameter of between 58.72 and 60.68mm and plano-convex in profile with a maximum thickness of 21.27mm. In the centre there is a round perforation which has been drilled from both sides. It is between 6.5 and 15.5mm in diameter. On some parts of the surface working marks are visible and around the central perforation on the flat side there is an oval incised line, about 1mm in width. Weight: 77.55g

Cast lead spindle whorl, circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile and section, with a neat circular hole that is 8.4 mm in diameter. Both surfaces are pitted with circular indentations that average about 1 mm in diameter. These are seen locally on ceramic spindle whorls but lead whorls are not normally decorated in Cornwall, but this find is from Dorset and was found with other Roman artefacts. Experimental work with spindle whorls show that flat and symmetrical examples like this work best for spinning and holding the wool. Bishop (1996) illustrates a flat and pitted lead s…

A lead alloy circular, biconical spindle whorl. The whorl has a large central, circular perforation which is straigth sided. There is cast decoration on both of the conves faces. On one is a series of chevrons and pellets within a border of small squares. On the other is decorated with a series of curved lines forming a cinquefoil with two or three pellets on each foil, overlain by a quatrefoil with a single pellet in each foil. A single plain line borders the design and there are further pellets between the outer foils. Date: Medieval to Post Medieval - c. 1200 - 1600 Dimensions: 2…

A complete lead alloy spindle whorl of Early Medieval date, c. AD 500-1000. The object is circular in shape and domed in cross section, with a flattened lower surface and convex upper surface. The upper surface is noticably smoothed, with this effect somewhat diminished by post depositional cracking. It is now a pale grey in colour due to patinisation. In the centre is a perforated aperture which is 6mm in diameter. The flat lower surface and domed upper surface conform with Walton Rogers form A1, thought to be consistent with usage between AD 500 and 1000. The small size spindl…

A bone spindle whorl. A domed spindle whorl with a slightly off-centre drilled hole (diameter 9.02 mm at the top). The hole has an hour glass profile. The spindle whorl has been made from a femural or humeral head (the ball joint of an upper limb bone) from an animal. The dome shape is the natural shape of the bone. The base is fairly flat, but there is a slight step part way across where the angle of cutting has changed when the ball joint was cut from the rest of the bone. Date: Roman to Medieval Dimensions: 39.57 mm x 37.17 mm x 20.95 mm Weight: 15.38 g

A complete lead-alloy spindle whorl of Medieval date, probably c.AD 1100 - 1300 but possibly as late as 1600. The spindle whorl is dome shaped (hemi-spherical) with a convex front and flat back and a central perforation (10.2mm diameter) running through it. . The upper surface is decorated with 11 large pellets. Six of these are spaced around the central hole to mark the points of a hexagon shape. Five further projecting knops are placed c3.7mm from these near the outside edge of the spindle whorl while a sixth appears to have been chipped away in an old scar. The pellets are place…
