A small conical cast lead weight of uncertain but possibly medieval date. The weight measures 11mm in height by 16.7mm (base diameter) by 7.2mm (top diameter) and weighs 13.4g. There is a circular hole running from the top to the bottom. The hole is slightly off centre at the base. The base has two diagional grooves at one side and a third groove running across from side to side next to the hole. It is also possible that this object is a small spindle whorl for a drop-spindle.

A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan. It is decorated unifacially; the lower face is marked and worn but seemingly only as a result of old damage. The upper face features a design rendered in relief. It may represent a figure advancing right with a staff, or, the other way up, perhaps the Roman numerals 'III' or the letter 'IN', below which a pair of 'C' shapes and a transverse line. At 47.7g it is equivalent to around one-and-a-half troy ounces, or around one-and-two-thirds ounces avoirdupois. Biggs and Withers (2000, 24-26) features two round flat wei…

A circular lead weight of possible late medieval date (13th-15th century). It has thickened edges and a central circular recess. A reasonable parallel was recovered from excavations at the College of Vicars Choral, York, between 1973-1980, and dated to between the 13th-15th centuries (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2955-6, no.14581).

A circular lead weight of medieval or post medieval date (c. AD 1100-1600). The weight is circular in shape with a rectangular cross-section. The upper face exhibits a moulded design which consists of a raised reserve around the circumference of the weight within which is a central lozengiform moulding with an arm extending from each of the four points to form the arms of a cross pommee which overlap with the reserve border at the edge of the weight. The lozenge is bisected by the arms of a cross fleury to divide the lozenge into four smaller lozenges. The arms of the cross fleury ter…

A Roman to Medieval cast lead alloy, or lead, perforated circular weight or spindle whorl, biconical with traces of a decorative pattern on both faces. On one face this is comprised of two concentric bands of raised dots (the ones in the outer band being larger than the ones oin the inner band) and on the other is a series of radiating lines. The weight has a circular perforation through the centre.
In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds tha…

A lead weight, probably a steelyard weight. The weight is an elongated pyramid with a truncated apex. There is pierced hole running from the apex to the base where it emerges slightly off- centre. The base ia sub- angular and slightly dished around a collar encircling the hole. The dishing suggests this was cast in an open mould, point downwards. THe collar indicates that the lead was still fairly soft when the hole was made. The weight is equivalent to approximately 2.5 ounces.

A conical lead weight. At the apex is an integrally cast large suspension lug with a small sub-circular pierced hole. The lug is flattened and narrowed from the apex and is rounded on the upper edge. It has been bent over and distorted. Set opposite each other about halfway down the conical body of the weight are two projections which appear to be the ends of a circular cross sectioned wire cast into the weight (either the ends of one object or two separate pieces). The circular base of the weight is slightly concave and has a small off-centre void or depression. There is some recent …

It is decorated on its upper face with a cross in relief dividing the surface into quarters. Incised finely on the flat lower surface is a pair of keys in saltire (cross keys). This device is found on a number of artefacts recorded on this database, all of post-medieval date; the keys are of this style. Through the keys is a vertical incision, with traces of a transverse incision and possible bord…
