Iron spearhead of probably late Medieval date. The blade is complete and a broad leaf shape with convex curved sides widening evenly form the point to the rounded base of the blade. A rounded rib runs from the socket about half way along the length of the blade on both sides; the ribs thicken towards the base but appear solid. The blade is otherwise flat and even in thickness. Due to the level of corrosion it is hard to identify the width of the sharpened edges, if any. The socket is conical and tapering, continuing the line of the ribs but only hollow until it meets the blade. The en…

A Medieval iron barrel padlock case of Goodall's Type D (in Biddle, 1990), with a hinged shackle, locked and corroded in place. The spring and bolt are enclosed within the case. Barrel padlocks with shackles (Type D) were intended to secure human or animal limbs (Goodall 1990 p.1001). Examples from Winchester date from the late 10th to early 15th century. The case is cylindrical and c.30mm in cross-section, widening to c.40mm diameter at the open end. The shackle (c.10.5mm diameter cross-section) is hinged at one end (to a projection from the case) and curves in an arc to the opposi…

A corroded T-shaped iron nail with a tapered, rectangular-sectioned shank. The tip is missing. A number of early to early post-medieval horseshoes have been found in close proximity and T-shaped nails were used to secure these;however, this nail seems larger than those used to secure horseshoes and was probably used for construction purposes. The nail probably dates from the Late Medieval to early-post-Medieval periods.

A forged iron latch which is probably from a door or window. The latch has been hand forged from a rectangular bar which would have been approximately 14 mm x 7 mm in section. The roundel has been hammered out and has a tapered profile. The attachment end has a circular loop hole of c.10mm diameter which was probably made using a punch. The downturned hook end has been drawn to a point, with a single hammer blow to create the swan neck. As this was found with two other similar latches and other iron work it is probable that this is of local manufacture. The site also has evidence of…

The roundel has been hammered out very thinly and has a tapered profile. The loop end has a circular 10 mm hole and the metal is waisted at this point, suggesting a punch was used. Much of the hook end is missing, but the remaining portion shows the bar was narrowed and probably drawn to a point. Dimensions are: Length 102 mm, Diameter of roundel 57.5, Weight 54 grams.
