A fragment of a silver whistle that comprises part of its tube, collar and attachment loops. The tubular whistle is made of silver sheet rolled into a cylinder and soldered lengthways along an abutting seam. One end of this tube terminates in an irregular break that has been squashed closed. The opposite terminal is also broken, slightly squashed and filled with a concreted grey material. Placed between these ends approximately half way down its surviving length is a single collar wrapped around the cylindrical tube. The collar is composed of spiralled silver wire wrapped around a s…

A Roman to Medieval cast lead alloy, or lead, perforated circular weight or spindle whorl, biconical with traces of a decorative pattern on both faces. On one face this is comprised of two concentric bands of raised dots (the ones in the outer band being larger than the ones oin the inner band) and on the other is a series of radiating lines. The weight has a circular perforation through the centre. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds tha…

An early Medieval lead-filled copper alloy pan weight, probably dating to c. AD 950-1150. The weight consists of a lead-filled copper alloy sheath; it is circular in plan, with either face decorated with an openwork saltire of two opposing arches. The arches are further elaborated with an incised line following the arc, with the two lines joined at the centre by two further incised transverse lines, creating a central sub-square field, possibly intended as a rudimentary union knot. The weight is sub-rectangular in cross-section with rounded edges, and the lateral face is plain. Dim…

Probably a Medieval or post medieval cast lead alloy cup weight from a set of nested weights, dating to c. AD 1300-1600. The weight was originally open in profile, having a circular base with the sides flaring up to a wider rim. It has been compressed and one side is now folded inwards, although the original base area remains relatively unaffected. The flat rim surface itself is decorated with a motif of repeated raised circles, which continue around the full circumference. No other decoration survives, but a possible attachment point is visible on the flat side, where two circular…

An incomplete cast lead alloy weight dating to the modern period, c. AD 1800-1900. The object is formed in the shape of a fish, a pointed oval form with a waisted tail which is more rectilinear in shape. The fish's fins do appear to have been attached or at least hinted at, but are now missing. It is D-shaped in cross section, with a flat and undecorated lower surface. On the lower surface are two possible attachment points, which could indicate that the object was attached to an additional weight which itself was connected to the fishing line. These are circular in form and locate…

The foot is sub-trapezoidal in cross section, with the front, broad, face cast into three parallel longitudinal ribs and a central longitudinal ridge on the reverse. A cast copper alloy pot leg dating to the post medieval period, c. 1600-1750. The leg is triangular in section and rectangular in shape, the triangular sectional appearance is  caused by a tall  central midrib which extends downwards in the centre of the object. It is unusually broken at the upper area, with the break occurring midway down the leg rather than at the point where the leg meets the body.  Cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from AD1200 to 1700 for serving and cooking. Legs and feet are the most commonly recorded finds and Butler et alii&n…

It has three conjoined convex ribs on the outer face, evenly spaced apart and very shallow. Above the ribs is a raised fetlock which runs horizontally across the outer face. An unidentified copper alloy object, probably of Early Iron Age date. The object is incomplete, comprising of a lead alloy disc with a single surviving attachment loop. The disc is decorated, all deeply incised, with a robed figure on horseback within a circular border. The border appears to have been used as a guide to cut away much of the original circumference, with, by the orientation of the decoration, between 2 and 9 o'clock missing. An extremely worn copper alloy trade token dating from AD 1600-1800. The token is circular and slender, badly worn so that the designs can no longer be read.
