The head is convex, possibly faceted and with a small piece of excess metal at the apex. It is uncertain how much of the detail of the head is affected by corrosion and being deformed while lost. An incomplete iron cleat. The cleat is oval in plan and rectangular in cross section. There are two integral arms on the logitudinal axis, one projecting at each edge. Both are angular in cross section, and one curves outwards. Both terminate in worn breaks. Both sides are undecorated. The cleat is corroded in places and has a brown-orange patina on the surface. An incomplete iron rotary key. The bow was heart-shaped, but one lobe is missing. The remaining lobe has a sub-circular aperture. The bow is flattened and and flared from the stem. The stem has a sub-angular cross section and expands slightly towards the broken tip. The rectangular bit is set at right angles to the bow and is in the shape of a forward facing angular S with two narrow clefts, one from each edge. Date: Roman - c. Incomplete Roman iron hipposandal (a type of horseshoe). The hooked heel only remains. The plate has incurved sides with the remnants of one flared wing at one side. At the back the plate curves upwards into a flared, convex heel plate with an incomplete backward projecting hook at the mid point of the upper edge. the hook is tapering and square sectioned. The roundel has been hammered out and has a tapered profile. The attachment end has a circular loop hole of c.10mm diameter which was probably made using a punch. A worn and corroded keyhole type horseshoe of probable post-Medieval date. The two branches are equal in form, with three nail holes to each branch, of which two retain the heads of their nails, within the fullered groove. The heels are tapered and thickened, with no calkins. The shoe has a slightly arched inner form and a slightly concave hoof side. Probably a draught shoe of circa 1650-1700.
