Fragment of rim from a copper alloy vessel. This is probably a rim from a cauldron or similar vessel. The rim is pointed and has an external bead. The vessel wall is thinned from the rim.The interior surface appaers smoothed whilst the exterior is rough and un-polished. There is clear evidence of mending of this vessel in the form of two rivet holes (one whole, with partial rivet and one incomplete). These were probably used to fix a plate of sheet metal (not present) to join a split in the vessel wall just below the rim. Medieval to post medieval. Possibly 15th to 17th century. Dimen…

Rim of a medieval pottery jar. A sagging based cooking jar. Lorraine Mepham has identified this as 10th to 12th century in date and originating from Southern England, possibly Hampshire. The fabric is reduced and grey in colour, and there are patches of orange-brown oxidisation on the external surface. The rim is tall, slightly everted and plain. There is a groove between the base of the rim and the shoulder and the outer surface is wiped in places. The vessel body is…

A pottery rim sherd of probable medieval date. The fabric has well sorted quartz/sand inclusions, with no evidence of glazing. The construction of this vessel is wheel thrown, with a slight groove to the rim, possibly to accept a lid. The rim flares outwards, which suggests a storage jar shape. There is no evidence of reduction within the fabric,so an oxidized firing is likely. The fabric has a buff colour throughout. A Rim sherd from a domestic vessel. The rim is flat topped and is sub-rectangular in plan, with the wall of the vessel curving inwards. The lead glaze has a mottled black/brown colour with a good gloss which suggests an oxidized firing. The fabric is tempered with sand which is finely sorted, with only slight reduction to the core of the fabric. The rim has been compressed during the throwing process and has a low porosity which suggests a near vitrification point has been reached. Possibly from Verwood. Late 17th to mid 18th century.

Only a fragment of the base survives and this appears flat, with no foot detail. The height is 22.5 mm Width 34.5 mm. Thickness 11.1 mm. Weight 11 grams.

The lower portion of a leg from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel. The leg base is sub-triangular and the upper edge is sub-oval in cross section. The outer face of the leg has a prominent vertical ridge which is triangular in section and tapers towards the base. There is evidence of sooting. Due to its size,it is probably from a cauldron. These are problematic to date closely when found out of contex as they were used over a long time span; however, it almost certainly dates from the Late Medieval to post-Medieval periods. See WAW 12EF35 for a similar example.

There is no evidence of glaze to the underside, which suggests that the glaze was dusted galena, and not in a liquid state when applied. The handle profile fits into the pulled type, with the angles matching the thumb and index finger. (The th…

A rim sherd from an early Roman Samian ware Dragondorff form 37 decorated vessel. The rim has an external bead, below which is a plain band (the fact this is fairly narrow suggests a 1st century date) and below this is ovolo (egg-and-tongue) decoration.
