A sherd from a small green glazed beaker or double handled cup of early post medieval date. The sherd incorporates part of the rim and upper handle, which is set at an angle. The light buff fabric has few visible inclusions other than occasional specks of mica. The curvature of the surviving rim suggests a diameter of about 8cm. Dimensions: 31.80mm 30.82mm by 8.95mm Weight: 7.46g

A cast copper alloy leg from a medieval or post-medieval metal cooking vessel, probably a post-medieval skillet judging by its dimensions and hoof-like form. The leg measures 53.11mm in length, 31.06mm in width and 18.10mm in thickness. It weighs 111.47g. The cross-section is D-shaped. From the base the leg narrows gradually to the point of the break, although in the centre of the surviving fragment the leg thickens briefly. There are also three slight vertical ridges which are equally spaced over the curving front. This leg would have been one of three on the complete vessel.

Three body sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. The sherds have been fired an orangey brown oxidised colour on the exterior surfaces and a reduced grey black on the interior. The fabric is very hard with a slight soapy feel and laminated fractures. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of sub-rounded and well-sorted red and black iron oxides measuring less than 0.5mm. The fabric has been tempered with a sparse amount (10%) of sub-angular well-s…

Two sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. The two undiagnostic body sherds have orangey brown oxidised exteriors and reduced brown grey interiors. One of the sherds exhibits a slightly brighter orange surface and a burnt interior. The clay matrix for these sherds contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of sub-rounded and well-sorted red and black iron oxides measuring less than 0.5mm. The fabric has been tempered with a common amount (30%) of sub-angular well-sor…

A sherd of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. The coarse textured sherd has a slight oxidisied buff to brown exterior and a reduced dark grey/brown interior. Its thickness suggests it is part of a vessel base. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of sub-rounded and well-sorted red and black iron oxides measuring less than 0.5mm. Ten sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. Nine of the sherds are undiagnostic body sherds and the remaining one is a very abraded rim. Less that 5% of the rim has survived, making it very difficult to decipher its form and diameter, but it does appear to be slightly globular in shape. The colour of the sherds vary, but generally they have oxidised orangey brown exteriors and reduced grey/brown interiors. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of …

Two sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. One has been oxidised orangey-brown all the way through. This may have happened after it was broken as the oxidisation visible in the fractures is slightly patchy and it has a softer more soapy feel than the other sherd. The other sherd has an orangey exterior and grey/brown interior. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of sub-rounded and well-sorted red and black iron oxides measuring less than 0.5mm. A cast copper alloy object which is probably the terminal from the drop handle from a vessel of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The zoomorphic terminal measures 23.4mm by 17mm by 14.8mm and weighs 24.4g. Both ends are flat with a off-centre hole which is much narrower at the mouth end. The terminal appears to be moulded to resemble a dog, with diagonally orientated leaf-shaped ears, sunken eyes, slightly narrowed snout, upwards projecting nose and open mouth. A similar zoomorphic terminal collar is illustrated in Egan (1998, p. 175, no. 487). Egan states that a comparable h…

The broken terminal end of a Roman copper alloy patera (skillet) handle. The sides of the handle taper towards the break with a double grooved linear border on either side. The terminal of the handle is circular with a beaded border running around its circumference, the centre is pierced for suspension and also has a beaded rim around its edge. A good parallel for this handle is provided by a complete vessel from Gloucestershire recorded on the database as GLO-048BB1. The handle would originally have been cast as one with the vessel. However, there is evidence for re-use. the broken e…

Two rim sherds from 1st century AD large, round barrel shaped storage jars or bowls. The rims are variously described as 'flat topped' beaded rims (Sunter & Woodward, 1986, 87)or 'flattened, tapering, triangular' rims (Seager Smith, 1993, 231). The fabrics are orange in colour with buff-orange to grey core and coarse and sandy in texture. They are similar to Gussage All Saints fabric type C, thought to originate in the Wareham/Poole Harbor region in the 1st Century AD (Wainwright, 1979, 50). In fact examples of this rim form are included as Black Burnished Ware from excavations at Ower…

a very small sherd of Roman Samian ware, probably from the Central Gaul (Lezoux) region (AD 120-200). The sherd measures 16.09mm x 15.04mm x 2.38mm thick. It weighs 0.76g

Two small sherds of late Romano-British fine colour coated ware (AD 240-399). One sherd has a hard buff-brown fabric with light grey core and probably derives from the New Forest area. It has the remains of a dark brown-purple slip on the exterior surface and measures 29.82mm x 25.52mm x up to 6.00mm thick. It weighs 5.16g. The second sherd has a slightly softer dark orange fabric with orange-purple exterior surface coated with a dark purple-brown slip. This sherd probably derives from the Oxfordshire area and measures 32.56mm x 27.90mm x 5.84mm thick and weighs 7.80g. The oxfordshire…

The triangular sherd measures 71.19mm in length by 48.83mm in width and is 5.90mm thick. The fabric is an orangey pink with occasional white flecks but no mica, so it is likely to have been produced at La Graufesenque in southern Gaul. Weight 20.37g
