A cast copper alloy Roman vessel foot, probably from a bucket. These items were used in sets of three to protect the bases of Roman cast or sheet bronze vessels, in particular buckets (Jackson 1990, 46). The foot has a slightly curving rectangular shape, which would have corresponded to the size of the base of the vessel it supported. In this case the bucket's base must have been around 18 cm in diameter. There are two opposing kidney-shaped perforations through the centre of the object and at each end is a cut away stepped notch. One side of the object is flat, but the other has a lon…

One sherd of coarseware. The fabric is reduced dark grey at the core with oxidised margins (orange on the exterior and buff on the interior). There is abundant rounded quartz sand temper with occasional iron rich pieces. The surfaces appear wiped. A slightly everted rim sherd from a thick-walled jar. The rim has a thumb-impressed "pie-crust" exterior edge. The form is recorded in the Wessex Archaeology Black Burnished Ware type series as WA Type 12 (Seagar-Smith & Davies, 1993, p. 232-233, Figure 123). 1 large sherd of pottery. It has a reduced dark grey core and oxidised buff surfaces. The fabric is tempered with abundant, fairly coarse sand. The sherd is part of a strap handle and rim from a jug/pitcher. The handle attaches to the upper surface of the rim, rising slightly and tapering before curving downward into a thick sub-rectangular section before it is broken (this break is more recent than those on the vessel rim). The upper surface of the handle is stab decorated with four short slashes at the rim and two longer ones as the handle narrows before the break. On the underside t…

Fragment of rim from a copper alloy vessel. This is probably a rim from a cauldron or similar vessel. The rim is pointed and has an external bead. The vessel wall is thinned from the rim.The interior surface appaers smoothed whilst the exterior is rough and un-polished. There is clear evidence of mending of this vessel in the form of two rivet holes (one whole, with partial rivet and one incomplete). These were probably used to fix a plate of sheet metal (not present) to join a split in the vessel wall just below the rim. Medieval to post medieval. Possibly 15th to 17th century. Dimen…

Rim of a medieval pottery jar. A sagging based cooking jar. Lorraine Mepham has identified this as 10th to 12th century in date and originating from Southern England, possibly Hampshire. The fabric has a slightly soapy texture and is coarsely tempered with abundant limestone and occasional flint and grog. The fabric is reduced and grey in colour, and there are patches of orange-brown oxidisation on the external surface. The rim is tall, slightly everted and plain. There is a groove between the base of the rim and the shoulder and the outer surface is wiped in places. The vessel body is…

The sherds range in size from 40.3 by 34.0mm, to 106.75 by 69.6mm, with a relatively uniform thickness of around 5.5mm. The handle sherds are thicker, at 22.65mm. Fragment from a copper alloy vessel. This is a large vessel leg probably from a cauldron. The fragment consists of the foot and part of the leg, which is has an irregular break at the top. The leg is tri-lobate in section with a rounded, prominent ridge running up the centre of the front of the leg. The back of the leg is flat. The foot projects forwards from the leg and has a triangular profile. The base of the foot apears mis-cast and is slightly hollowed and rough. The surface of the leg is quite pitted and bumpy. This also indicates mis-casting and poor finishing. Late medieval to …

A probably medieval lead mend for a pottery vessel. An irregularly shaped piece lead with one large plate and one smaller. The larger plate is sub-triangular with a smoothed surface and a slightly chamfered edge around it (5.55 mm thick). The smaller plate is much thinner (1.87 mm thick) and also roughly triangular. It has a more uneven surface. At one side the plates appear to be joined and there are also two thin bars of lead joining the together at another. Where there is a gap between the plates there is a remnant of thin-walled pottery between them. This appears to have a reddish-…
