Earthen ware pottery fragment length 86mm, width 96mm, thickness 15mm, weight 117.8g. Reduced dark grey fabric with frequent mica, occasional black grog tempering <2mm, infrequent lime stone inclusions. Grey core, buff exterior. Straight side walls, there is a lip below the rim which has an undulating outside edge and stabbed decoration on the top edge. The vessel would have had a sagging base. this type of vessel would have been made in the north Gloucestershire/Worcestershire area and dates to the 11th-12th century.

Rim of a medieval pottery jar. A sagging based cooking jar. Lorraine Mepham has identified this as 10th to 12th century in date and originating from Southern England, possibly Hampshire. The fabric has a slightly soapy texture and is coarsely tempered with abundant limestone and occasional flint and grog. The fabric is reduced and grey in colour, and there are patches of orange-brown oxidisation on the external surface. The rim is tall, slightly everted and plain. An assemblage comprising 14 sherds of coarseware pottery. 11 sherds of coarseware pottery. Largely reduced mid-grey to dark grey, highly fired fabric with orange and brown oxidisation the surfaces. Tempered with abundant poorly sorted coarse material, comprising large angular flint pieces, rounded quartz sand, iron rich stone pieces and fine sand. 1 sherd of early medieval coarseware. The fabric is reduced and pale grey except for the oxidised exterior surface which is orangey-red. It contains abundant poorly sorted temper of rounded quartz sand, flint, chert and calcareous pieces (up to 5 mm). The inclusions are prominemt and protruce through the surface of the vessel.
