Rim of a medieval pottery jar. A sagging based cooking jar. Lorraine Mepham has identified this as 10th to 12th century in date and originating from Southern England, possibly Hampshire. The fabric has a slightly soapy texture and is coarsely tempered with abundant limestone and occasional flint and grog. The fabric is reduced and grey in colour, and there are patches of orange-brown oxidisation on the external surface. The rim is tall, slightly everted and plain. There is a groove between the base of the rim and the shoulder and the outer surface is wiped in places. The vessel body is…

The base is slightly sagging and the rim is flat-topped, in-turned and has an external bead. The rim and base are from cooking jars, and several of the body sherds sre likely to be from such vessels. Small fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid 1st to 2nd century AD. The fragment consists of a portion of the small base upon which the vessel would have stood, along with part of the base itself. Given the small size of the fragment it is difficult to determine what kind of vessel it came from. The fabric of the vessel is mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip.

Small decorated fragment of the body of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture, dating to the mid 1st to 2nd century AD. The decoration consists of a central raised band, with a raised line of dots on either side. Either side of this are a series of dotted, dashed and straight lines, which would have formed part of a larger pattern. The shallow curve of the fragment suggests it probably once belonged to a bowl or similar vessel, but the form of this is difficult to determine. The fabric is mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip.
