An incomplete copper alloy cooking vessel leg of medieval to post-medieval date, c. 12th-19th centuries AD.  The leg is sub-rectangular in section with a prominent central vertical rib, while overall its form is narrower at the base of the vessel and flares out to the foot. The upper edge is broken, and the patina is a covering mottled green and black.  Butler, et al. 2009: "From about AD 1100, cast copper alloy vessels...were commonly used for downhearth cooking, with the vessel sitting among the embers or suspended over the fire. All but…

Fragment of a copper alloy item, probably part of the side of a large cast vessel. The fragment is irregular in shape with very worn breaks on all sides. One face has a raised ridge, a casting seam running down it, the ridge has been fettled. In profile the piece is slightly concave so the edges at each end of the casting seam curve upwards and the centre curves downwards. Cracking on the back suggests some of this is due to damage but the way the piece thickens slightly towards these edges suggests some might be original curvature. The piece is 36.7mm long, 34.7mm wide and 4.4mm thic…

Possibly a cast copper alloy fragment from a two-part handle from a drinking vessel (probably a tankard) of probable post medieval date (cAD1600 to 1800). The fragment consists only of the thumb rest. One end is a square based straight sided flat plate with two holes with the broken copper alloy rivets still in place. Above this, along the straight top edge, is the groove for the thumb rest bar. The piece then has a sub-rectangular flat tab with convex curved outer sides and corners which narrow in the centre of the outer edge to form a rounded knop. In the centre of the thumb rest ba…

A Late Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy chafing dish handle, probably dating to c. AD 1400 - 1600. The handle is heart-shaped with truncated point, and a hexagonal cross section. The resulting top bar is slightly narrowed and recessed, and passes through the perforation of a sub-rectangular lug. The lug has one rounded and one flattened end, from the flattened end extends a circular protrusion for attachment to the vessel. The handle measures 46.45mm in length, with the lug 22.8mm long, together they measure approximately 56.7mm in length. The handle is 57.3mm wide and 4.6mm thic…

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy pot foot with a small remnant of the pot attached, dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The foot is triangular in cross-section, tapering downwards. There are three longitudinal, convex raised ribs running down the front, the central rib protruding further than the others (thus forming the triangular cross-section), and extending further up as it joins the remnant of the pot body. The ribs come together towards the base of the foot. The back of the foot is flat. It has an old irregular break at the lower end. The leg widens and spreads outwards towards the po…

A copper alloy Post-Medieval pot leg, dating to the period c. AD 1500-1700. The leg is broadly triangular in cross section, the inner surface being flat and the outer surface formed of five conjoined convex ribs. The leg terminates downward in a flared, hoof-like foot, now very worn, separated from the leg by a raised collar. The object has a grey-green patina. The leg measures 50.3mm in length, 29.9.mm in width, and 15.2mm in thickness and weighs 93.59g. Butler et al (2009: 4) defines this type of pot leg as a type C, which was in use by the 16th century and almost universal du…

An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic spout of Medieval date, c. AD 1400 - 1500. The spout is from a copper alloy vessel, either a ewer or a laver. The spout is tubular with a zoomorphic head terminal in the form of a dogs head with gaping jaws that clasp a circular tube (7.3mm in diameter) that protrudes from its mouth by 3.19mm and is considerably worn by old breaks. The head iteself consists of a raised brow section which is square in plan which then curves downwards to form the dog's muzzle which takes the form of a small triangular knop with a curved apex. When viewed side on one…

Post Medieval cast copper alloy foot and part of the leg from a cooking vessel. It is roughly D-shaped in section, with flattened reverse and five ribs running down the convex front. The ribs are evenly spaced with one at each outer side. The rounded foot is separated from the leg by a prominent rounded transverse collar on the front. The ribs on the leg are less prominent. The leg is almost vertical when standing flat on the foot. At the top of the leg is a flat cur rather than a break. It measures 43.4mm in length, 30.8mm in width, 19.2mm in thickness and weighs 103.97g. A simil…

Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy pot leg, 1200-1700 AD. The leg is trapezoid in section with a wider front than back and a central raised rib running down the front. It has an old irregular break at the upper end. and has lost part of one side to a break or mis-casting; there are also several holes in the front from mis-casting The leg widens outwards at the base to create the plain trapezoid foot. The foot has an irregular front edge and may have been intended to have rounded front corners and an indented curved front with a central projection at the end of the rib bu…

Post Medieval cast copper alloy pot foot and part of the leg. The leg is D shaped in section with a flat back; it is broken off just above a transverse collar with an old break. The foot is also D shaped in section with five moulded 'toes' running down the front giving a scalloped lower edge and a flat back. The base of the foot is flat and would mean the leg sat at c.80 degrees to vertical. It is 39.5mm long, 22.4mm wide and 16.6mm thick; it weighs 41.74 grams. Cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler et al (2009:4) sugges…

A leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel such as a cauldron or skillet, of medieval or post-medieval date. The leg measures 46.1mm by 22.1mm by 11.5mm and weighs 52g. The cross-section is D-shaped, with a flat undecorated back and a curving front. The D-shaped base is slightly rounded and at a near right-angle to the rest of the leg. From the base the leg narrows gradually but widens again briefly after about 20mm. Alove and below the wider section there are five linear vertical grooves which are equally spaced around the curving front. This leg would have been one of three on the…

A fragment of a copper alloy vessel of probable post-medieval date. It is difficult to be certain if this is a rim or a base fragment. It is possibly a piece of a base from a pedestal footed vessel. It has a curved outer edge with a groove and ridge around the circumference. The vessel is thinned considerably from the edge.
