An incomplete copper-alloy casing from a medieval drop-shaped weight, formerly containing a lead core. The body was once piriform, expanding to a rounded base from a point at the top. A broken loop projects from a flattened summit, above a collar of two circular concentric ridges formed by a pair of grooves. The loop only exists to one side. Around 50% of the copper-alloy casing survives, with losses at two main point one the sides, leaving a small remnant between them at the base; the lead core has been lost entirely. Measurements: 63 mm in maximum height and has a maximum …

A flat discoidal lead alloy cast Roman steelyard weight of 442.21g (approximately 16 Roman uncia (ounces)). Two stumps of an iron loop are visible, cast into the weight and showing on both faces, slightly off centre. On one side these stumps have splayed ends suggesting that the loop was formed from a U-shaped piece of metal.

A fragment of a Medieval copper alloy steelyard weight, probably dating to AD 1257- 1300. The surviving fragment comprises of a portion of the wall of what was originally a hollow, globular copper alloy casing for a lead core. The fragment is decorated, cast in relief, with a triangular shield bearing a heraldic device of a crudely depicted double headed eagle (see below). The wall is c. 2.2mm thick, expanding to 3.9mm at the heraldic decoration. Dimensions: length 43.8mm; width 50.5mm; thickness 3.9mm; weight 28.77g. Similar, complete examples of steelyard weights are published…

An incomplete medieval (c.1200-1350) steelyard weight, consisting of the incomplete copper alloy shell only and missing the solid lead interior. Now squashed, the weight would have been roughly conical in shape with a rounded base. A flat oval platform (21.4x14.8x1.9mm) sits at the apex and from the centre a D-shaped suspension loop projects. To the join at one side is a pair of decorative transverse grooves. The centre of the loop is partly filled with copper alloy, perhaps a casting flaw, although the piercing itself is slightly elongated as if through use. The casing weighs 44.51g…

A lead and copper alloy steelyard weight in the form of a quarter-length bust, possibly of boy satyr, attached to the flat face of a large hemishpere of lead with a sheet of copper alloy on the between. The bust has long hair gathered up in a Harpocrates-style top-knot worn widely by children whilst two thick curls run down each side of his head. The hair at the back is parted down the centre and waved. The face is crudely cast and asymmetrical. It is rounded with large cheeks and very little chin. The mouth is small with proportionally large lips. The nose is triangular and flattened…

Cast lead steelyard weight, circular in plan and biconical in profile, with the base of the iron suspension loop still within the upper aperture, that is 6 mm in diameter, at the apex of the weight. See YORYM-369198 for a similar lead biconical steelyard weight with an iron suspension loop that is dated from the Roman period. Read (2001) illustrates a similar lead biconical steelyard weight with a copper alloy suspension loop from Wiltshire on page 115, fig.72, no.830, which is dated from the 1st to the 4th century AD. Bailey (2011) illustrates a similar biconical lead steely…

A fragment of copper alloy steelyard weight with heraldic decoration. Fragments of the wall of the globular, hollow weight only. Originally the weightwould have been filled with lead. Date: Medieval - c.1250-1300 AD. Dimensions: 31.09mm x 21.65mm x 2.86mm Weight: 11.03g This is similar to a complete example recorded on the database in record SOM-FDCC33. Roman bi-conical cast lead steelyard weight with copper alloy loops at the bottom and top, one containing an S-shaped chain link. The central lead weight is corroded with only part of the surface remaining. The loops are formed from lengths of rectangular sectioned copper alloy wire. It is not clear if the upper and lower loops are formed of one piece of wire that runs completely though the weight, or seperate pieces embedded in each end. Both loops are very worn in the middle. The chain link is formed of a piece of wire bent into an S shape with straight ends and one end hooked thoru…

A copper alloy steelyard weight with lead core. The weight is globular, almost pear-shaped, and undecorated except for a collar f two ridges around the suspension loop. Part way down the body, at the widest part, is a small smoothed area of lead which may be a pouring hole where the lead was added. On the base is another, larger and more irregular smoothed area of lead, possibly where there was a vent (accidental or intentional). At the top is an inverted U-shaped suspension loop. Around the base of the loop is a transverse collar of two raised ridges. The loop is filled with iron cor…

A cast lead steelyard weight of probable Roman date. The weight is biconical (diameter 23mm, height 20.5mm) with a central shaft which contains a thin length of copper alloy. This would have been bent to form a hook at the apex, although the hook survives only to a length of about 10mm and is now bent out of shape. Weight: 46.93g
