A complete copper-alloy pin dating from the Roman to medieval periods. The pin has a flat circular head, on which little decoration remains aside from a faint beaded border inset slightly from the edge on one face. Striations are present on both faces. The head narrows to a collar of two transverse mouldings, which are only present on the front, before extending to the shaft. The shaft is circular in cross-section and is bent just below the midway point. The pin measures 61.1mm in length, 2mm in diameter at the shaft, 14.8mm in diameter at the head, and 0.5mm in thickness at the …

An incomplete cast lead alloy pin with iron shaft dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1500-1600. While both the head and shaft survive, the head has been damaged and two large chunks are missing on opposite sides from one another. Nevertheless, the head was clearly once spherical in shape with a slightly flattened top. The gouges of the damage show that the head was originally solid. The head appears plain and undecorated in appearance. The cylindrical shaft has also been damaged and is bent at a 45 degree angle from its original state. However, it extends to its full length…

County: Dorset

An incomplete copper alloy fragment of probable Iron age or Roman date, possibly a pin head, probably dating to c. 100 BC-AD 410. The pin consists of an oblate spherical head, with a vestigial shank projecting from one side. There appears to be an incised circle at the apex of the head, although this is obscured by corrosion. Length: 11.0 mm; diameter: 13.80mm; thickness: 8.10mm; diameter of shaft: 2.70mm; weight: 6.95g. It is difficult to parallel such an undiagnostic object, however the patina and the bulk of material found in the vicinity would support a Roman date.

The head is cuboid, with 4 sides and rectangular in cross-section, each panel is faceted, with cut corners and a flat lozengiform front panel. The stem is circular in cross-section and bent out of shape. This pin could be mistaken fro Early Medieval but the absence of a collar around its shank points to a Roman date. Reference: This belongs to Cool's (1990, 164) group 15 for which she suggests a 3rd or 4th century date. Three examples were excavated at Colchester (Crummy…
