Treasure case 2018 T547: Disclaimed, returned to finder Description: A complete gold finger ring with a gem inset bezel probably dating to the Post- Medieval period. The hoop would have originally been circular in profile but has been compressed from one side of the ring so that it is now sub-oval. The hoop is circular in cross section and even in thickness (1.2mm) until reaching near the bezel. At this point the hoop flattens and widens on both sides into a fleur de lis design, both of whose outer petals point out and away from the bezel. The central petals of the fleur de …

The hoop is undecorated and broadly D-shaped in form, with a flattened bezel and broad, slightly carinated shoulders. The latter are D-shaped in cross-section, narrowing and becoming rounder towards the base of the hoop. A flat, oval engraved intaglio, red-orange in colour and probably of carnelian, is set into and is largely level with the bezel, with it extending to the edge. Engraved into the surface of the intaglio is a depiction of a female figu…

Description:  Gold ring, made of two twisted gold rods of round section. The two ends are knotted round each other. The ring has been bent into an oval shape. Probably Viking, 9th-11th century. Dimensions: 29 x 17.5mm and 2.5 mm in section. Weight 3.98g Discussion: The form of the ring is consistent with Viking manufacture, although a ring of only two twisted rods would be unusual. Modern imitations of Viking jewellery are not uncommon and are often inspired by Viking designs rather than direct copies, so the possibility that this fits into that category cannot be excl…

Treasure Case 2016 T925; Description: A Roman silver finger ring, dating to the third century. The ring has an oval hoop with straight sub-triangular sloping shoulders, although now worn, these appear to have originally had a wide central ridge. At the base of these shoulders the hoop of the ring changes direction at a distinct carination. At the apex of the ring between the two shoulders there is a raised circular bezel. This bezel is decorated with a linear band of decoration, with a slightly off-centre incised line flanked by two bands of chevrons. Each chevron is comprised of t…

Roman gold finger ring with a simple D-shaped hoop widening and thickening at the shoulders to the bezel which has an open lozenge shaped hole in the centre to hold a stone or intaglio, now missing. The shoulders and bezel have been formed of a flattened area of gold the long sides of which have been rolled inwards, to meet in the middle on the shoulders and to clasp the missing stone. The shoulders and bezel are thus hollow and the edges of the setting for the stone rough and slightly irregular where the edge has been pushed over the edge of the stone to hold it. The ring has been…

A Roman copper-alloy finger-ring with intaglio of Henig type II dating to c. AD 50-150. The ring is pointed oval in section with a flatter but still convex inner side and convex outer side. The hoop widens and thickens towards the bezel which is continuous with the hoop with no distinct shoulders or flattening. In the bezel is set a large, oval, translucent blue piece, probably glass rather than a gem. It has a curved top which continues the curve of the ring without projecting and some old damage to one side of the ring shows the side of the piece tapers in width towards the back. On…
