A lead zoomorphic button, of medieval or post-medieval period. The front is decorated in the shape of an animal head, possibly a lion, with prominent snout surrounded by what it seems to be a thick mane. The animal's face is defined by two big brows that frame the eyes and reach the nose. The wide snout fiils completely the lower part of the head. The external edge of the object is decorated with a set of grooves and ridges which create a sort of mane or hair. The back part, undecorated, is divided by two deep grooves crossing at right angle at the shank point. The loop has been f…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead ampulla. Ampullae were an important kind of pilgrim souvenir in the medieval period. They were designed to contain a dose of thaumaturgic water, which would have been given to the pilgrims at the shrines and holy wells. This example dates to between c. 1350-1550. Almost all of the ampulla survives; but it is in a very poor condition and the lead has been badly damaged by the plough. The rim has been distorted and damaged. The neck is bent. Both lugs have broken off, leaving behind two small stumps of lead on either side of the flask, indicating where the lugs were once …

Post Medieval lead token or possibly seal fragment. Lead alloy disk with a raised, cast or stamped, design of the initials IR or HR (ligated) within a line circle on one side. It is 14.9mm in diameter, 1.3mm thick and 1.70 grams in weight. The object is unusually small for a lead token and may be a broken part of a seal. The use of initials would suggest a Post Medieval date (1500-1850 AD) for either.

A lead spindle whorl of indeterminate date. The object is at the upper end of the distribution curve for the normal weight of spindle whorls at 29g. This may suggest that it was used for spinning relatively fine yarn (Wild, 1988, 25). The approximate bun shape of the whorl is known from the Bronze Age to the Medieval period. The diameter is 24.81mm. Spindle Whorls made from lead are relatively rare and might suggest a date of between the Roman and Medieval periods.

A biconical lead plumb bob possibly dating from the 12th-15th century. There are the corroded remains of an iron suspension loop running through the object. A good parallel for this form of plumb bob was recovered from excavations at the College of Vicars Choral, York, between 1973-1980. Although the York example, dated to the 12th-13th century, had a copper alloy suspension hook (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2705-6, no. 14511). It is possible that this plumb bob may be later medieval in date.

The second disc from a two-part cast lead cloth seal of probable late sixteenth century date. The cloth seal has a diameter of 25.39mm and weighs 4.04g. There is a fringe of extra metal around the disc and on the interior surface there is the imprint from a coarse textile. On the external surface part of the legend is visible. The Lombardic lettering reads [COM] DORS[..], indicating that the seal came from Dorset. The missing central rivet was probably decorated with a crown over a squarish device, possibly a portcullis.
