An incomplete lead cloth seal. A two part seal with decoration on both discs. On one face is a central cross or privy mark flanked by possible letters and some symbols; a six pointed star on the bottom right. On the other face are further indistinct markings in a pellet border. Date: Post Medieval - c. 1500 - 1650 Dimensions: 18.15 mm x 2.61 mm Weight: 4.22 g This is similar to a number of items in Egan, G 1994 Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum, e.g. No. 208 (ibid p. 90 & p. 181 fig 30) which is dated to the 16th to early 17th centuries

The seal is formed of two oval discs joined by an integral rivet on the rear decorated disc passing through a circular hole in the other disc. One disc is moulded with a design of a probable crowned portcullis within a beaded border and surrounded by a legend, now largely illegible. The crown has pellets on the band. The rear of this disc has an integral rivet at the centre and bears an impression of the weave of the fabric to which is was originally attached. A post medieval lead cloth seal dating to c.1500-1650. It is circular in plan. This two-part seal is of the type used on bales of fustian originating from the Bavarian city of Augsburg. One face bears a capital A with a chevron bar. The opposing face bears unclear traces of a pinecone design. Reference: A very similar seal recorded in 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items at the British Museum' by Geoff Egan, (Egan 1994: 106, fig. 41, refs: 308-310) has been attributed to Augsburg in Germany. Fragment of a two part lead cloth seal. Part of the ring, disk and plug between them survives. It is stamped on both sides. Obverse: Crown over shield of England, the inscription is very worn but would have read [S'VLII'PAO'VIALLE'LON']. Reverse: ornate shield with equal armed cross, each arm made of thee lines, with sword in the first quarter (arms of London) L[ONDINI PRO PANNIS LANI]CIS. A complete post-medieval two-part lead cloth seal. The cloth seal survives as two circular discs held together by an integral rivet attached to one disc that pierces the second and then is squashed. There is a letter stamped on the other side, possibly an L or Y or possibly a 7. Such marks were use by clothes weavers and dyers as personal seals in the late 16th to late 17th centuries. A worn two-part lead alloy cloth seal dating to 1508 -1553. One face of the seal depicts a king enthroned, holding a spear and sceptre with the Arms of England visible on his tabbard. The letter H can be seen between the king's legs with a legend SIG[ILLVM CVS]TOM HENRY VIII. These cloth seals were used for imports of fine patterned cloth.
