A complete Post-Medieval gold and rock crystal 'momento mori' finger ring, dating to AD 1680 - 1720. The hoop is circular with a D-shaped cross-section. The bezel is oval set with a domed and facetted rock crystal or glass stone secured by a scalloped rim with foliate decoration. Beneath the stone is black fabric background on to which is sewn twisted gold wire. The gold wire is sewn in a looping border. Inside the border the wire has become detached and jumbled, but may have originally formed personal initials as seen on other rings of this type (e.g. OXON-9A2E11). The underside of …

The pendant is sub-triangular in form and consists of a gold frame which encloses a slightly bi-convex piece of rock crystal. The frame is constructed from gold sheet, with rectangular strips along each upper edge and sub-triangular sheets on front and back with an aperture cut to house the rock crystal. The base was left open, presumably for insertion of the rock crystal, and was then sealed with a separate strip of sheet gold with the other sides of the frame folded over it to hold it in place. A late medieval gold finger-ring, with a sapphire setting. The bezel is hexagonal and cusped with six flat lobes. The sapphire has six sides following the gemstones natural crystal habit.
