A flint axehead. A flaked axehead. Made on a nodule of pale grey-brown flint, now patinated to matt off-white and with iron staining along the flake ridges. Flaked on both faces from the edges, butt and cutting edge. All the cortex has been removed. The side edges are largely straight. It has a wide, slightly convex, cutting edge formed by flake removals from the edge into the body of the axehead. The axe tapers to the butt and has a lentoid cross section. There is some slight damage to the butt.

A sub-rectangular flint scraper. Made on a tertiary flake of dark orange-brown to beige flint with a covering yellowed mid-gloss patina. There is a remnant of the striking platform retained at the proximal end and a pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral face. There are remnant flaking scars on the dorsal surface. Around 75 percent of the outer edge, extending along both side margins and around the distal end, has irregular, semi-invasive to steep retouch struck from the ventral face, creating a slightly asymmetrical scraping edge which has become overhanging at the distal end.

An incomplete Neolithic flint polished axehead dating to 4000 BC - 2350 BC. The cutting edge end of a polished axehead, it is sub-rectangular and has a pointed oval cross-section. One side margin is missing due to damage or re-use of flint. The butt end appears to have been deliberately removed as the termination consists of two smooth linear scars. One face retains around 75% of its polished surface while the other face has had almost all of the original polished surface removed leaving behind one central broad flake scar and multiple blade scars all struck from different directions.…

A flint core tool, probably a flaked axehead fragment. The flint was originally mid-grey flint, now covered in a smooth layer of blue-white re-cortification giving an opaque, matt patina. The axe probably had an oval cross section. A small amount of cortex remains on the centre of one face and many ridges show traces of iron staining. There are multiple flake removal scars on one face and fewer on the other forming the cutting edge. The flakes are invasive and parallel. The object has been broken along the long axis and across the body.

A bifacially flaked flint axe fragment made on a weathered, thin and elongate tabular nodule. Both faces retain areas of worn chalky cortex, but have been modified by broad, shallow irregular flaking to form an irregular lenticular cross section. the piece represents the butt-end of the axe and tapers to a blunt point at the butt-end. One margin has a straight midline edge, the other side is more irregular; both edges have evidence of grinding and polishing, but this is limited in extent and does not extend over either face. The piece may have been broken in use, a bi-faceted cross bo…

One part of a possible flaked axe or pick roughout, probably broken during manufacture. Both faces show evidence for crude, sometimes deep flaking to form an assymetrical sub-lozengiform cross section. One face retains a large patch of thick, worn chalky cortex. One end tapers to an irregular point, and there is slight evidence for deliberate battering of part of one edge. The break is oblique, both longitudinally and laterally, and may be a result of end-shock during manufacture. The break has formed a platform from which two short flakes have been removed on one side of the object, …

A flaked axehead worked down from a larger ground and polished axe segment. The object is small with a pointed oval cross section. Areas of the original polished surface are visible across central to cutting edge areas of both faces with semi invasive, scaled, low angle flaking around margins. The flint has a smooth, thick off-white re-cortification with some coarse chalky cortex at the butt end of one face, areas of reddish brown ferrous staining are also present. Modern damage of a deep flake removal at the cutting edge reveals the original colour of the flint to be mid grey.

An incomplete, partially ground and polished flint axehead. Bifacially flaked all over to form a slightly assymetrical lenticular cross-section with narrow, rounded, slightly irregular margins. The object tapers from the remains of the cutting end, narrowing slightly toward the (missing) butt. Only a cursory attempt has been made to grind the main body of the axehead, with small to negligible areas of abrasion on high points and some flake scar ridges. The margins have been ground more heavily over battered edges. On one face there is some evidence that the cutting edge was ground, al…

The broken butt end of a ground and polished flint axe. The axe has a lenticular cross-section with slightly rounded sides and has been partially ground during manufacture leaving a number of truncated flake scars on both faces. The object tapers towards the butt end, which has been truncated by removal of two small, steep flakes struck from one face. The fragment thins very slightly toward the butt end and a small area of steeper ground bevel for the butt remains on one face. The main cross-body break is abrupt, flat and slightly oblique and could represent breakage during use or del…

An incomplete broken mid-section or butt end of a ground and polished flint axe. The axe has a sub-lenticular cross-section with faceted sides and has been extensively ground during manufacture; only one small truncated oval flake scar remains. It tapers very slightly and thins more noticeably toward the butt end. The principle break comprises of a concave flake scar with no obvious point of origin, which may represent breakage during use. The fragment tapers to the other end and has been entirely modified by removal of at least five small flakes struck from both faces. The axe has an…

A broken fragment of a ground and polished axehead. All that remains is the cutting edge, obliquely flaked by a deliberate tranchet strike on one edge. The axehead has a well formed, gently curved cutting edge with faceted edges and incorporated a small area of cortex on one face. Mid to pale grey marbled flint with a thin pale grey patina and matt to semi-matt surfaces. There are several red-brown ferrous stains along the broken edges and several probable plough scrapes on the polished surfaces. The unusual removal may have been intended to create a new temporary cutting edge on the …

The incomplete butt end of a broken, ground and polished axehead. The object is partially ground, with limited polishing and numerous truncated flake scars remaining. The cross-section is asymmetrical and lenticular with slightly faceted sides. The break is flat with a hinge fracture which has turned approximately 90 degrees to remove a small part of the axial ridge on one face. There are several minor flake removals from the butt, possibly as a result of more recent edge damage. The object has a thick white patina with low-gloss to matt surfaces and red-brown ferrous stains across bo…

A flaked axehead. Crudely bifacially flaked sub-triangular tool made on a partially naturally thermally fractured mid-grey flint nodule or large flake. Both faces show scars from relitively flat, shallow broad flake removals in multiple directions. The putative cutting edge is formed by flaking along the axis of the tool, resulting in an irregular edge (now partially removed by later damage) The piece has a pointed oval cross section. The tapering margins and 'butt' are made by irregular steep flaking and edge-battering. The axe shows an all over thin off-white mid-gloss patina with oc…

A small bifacially worked flint axehead with parallel sides and a much-damaged cutting edge. The butt is abruptly tapered to a break. The piece comprises of reworking of a broken ground and polished axe, some areas of original ground surface and edge remain visible. The flaking ranges from shallow to moderately steep. It has a pointed oval cross-section. The surface is irregularly patinated with white re-cortification on one side only possibly reflecting variations in composition of the natural flint, and has a mid-gloss patina. There are common red-brown ferrous stains mainly along f…

An incomplete, broken elongate secondary flint flaked axe, possibly a rought-out for polishing which was discarded during manufacture. Pale grey flint with all over semi-gloss white patina and occasional reddish brown ferrous stains on flake scar ridges.
The piece has broadly parallel sides and one surviving end which is irregularly curvilinear, and incorporates an area of hard chalky material. It is possible that the intent was to make this the cutting edge and that the axe was discarded when it proved impossible to remove the chalky inclusion. The flaking is irregular, broad and s…
