Flaked on both faces from the edges, butt and cutting edge. All the cortex has been removed. The side edges are largely straight. It has a wide, slightly convex, cutting edge formed by flake removals from the edge into the body of the axehead. The axe tapers to the butt and has a lentoid cross section. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A handaxe made on a rounded nodule of mottled mid to dark grey flint. The butt is principally formed from worn, chalky cortex, modified by an area of steep flaking on both faces. The resulting sharp edges appear deliberately battered to blunt. The remainder is all-over flaked, with shallow flake scars except for the area of stacked hinge fractures on one face. The margins are slightly zig-zagged and gently concave, originally converging to a narrow, elongate pointed tip, which has been lost to more recent damage. The handaxe has a pointed oval section. Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bifacially worked flint implement made on an irregular nodule of opaque mottled orangey brown flint. Areas of worn chalky cortex remain on both faces and part of one margin. The remainder of the surface comprises irregular, sometimes deep flake scars, many of which have hinge terminations. Neither the butt nor the tip are well formed and one margin appears truncated by very steep opportunistic flaking. The object may be an abandoned hand-axe blank or roughout which has failed because of large flaws within the stone. The steep truncated margin may indicate subsequent salvagi…

A flint core. A single platform bladelet core of irregular shape, but tending towards conical. Made from a piece of dark grey pebble flint with a glossy, mottled blue-white patina. There is some abraded iron-stained cortex remaining. The rest of the "conical" surface is covered in multiple converging bladelet removal scars. The flakes have been removed from a single platform. The edges of the core show signs of deliberate platform edge abrasion. Date: Mesolithic- Neolithic - c. 10000 - 2350 BC Dimensions: 24.91 mm x 32.38 mm x 28.43 mm Weight: 27.98 g

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a partially naturally fractured tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, brown-grey flint with a paler beige patina. There are areas of cortex and sub-cortex on both faces, but substantially less on the naturally fractured face. The worked face has multiple semi-invasive flake removals at the cutting edge and along the sides. The other, naturally fractured face, there is some more haphazard flaking, perhaps aimed at thinning the body and creating a viable striking platform. It appears …

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque,  grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces , particularly around the edge of the butt. The cutting edge is unfinished and has some post-depositional damage. It was probably squared and was formed by long, invasive, longitudinal flaking. The sides of the axehead taper from the cutting edge to the broad, rounded butt. The flaking along the edges is fairly regular, creating a zig zag.&n…

A flint axehead, probably a roughout for polishing. A bifacially flaked axehead made on a tabular nodule of mottled, opaque, pale grey flint with a paler grey patina. Vestigial areas of cortex and subcortex remain on both faces. The cutting edge is unfinished. It is crudely rounded with some short, longitudinal flaking to create the edge. This has been unsuccessful in removing a steeply angled facet on one face which would preclude use of the axehead in it's existing form. The sides of the axehead are tapering from the cutting edge to the thinned, rounded butt. The flakin…

A large irregular elongate flint blade flake with a triangular cross-section. The flint is mottled grey with a mid-gloss patina covered with a white to off-white re-cortification and red-brown ferrous stains. The dorsal surface retains weathered chalky cortex over most of one side; a single partial long flake scar, possibly from a similarily sized blade flake removal occupies the other side. There is crude dorsal retouch to the cortex margin. Similar flaking at the distal end may be post depositional damage or crude retouch. The ventral side has a smooth bulb of per…
