Object type: TILE
Broad period: MODERN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of ceramic building material, probably a roof tile, probably of Modern date, although the amount of Roman material in the area suggests an unusual Roman form cannot be ruled out. The fragment is irregular in plan and rectangular in section, broken and abraded on three sides with one complete, angled edge. It has a fine hard fired completely oxidised fabric. Fine linear striations on the surface may suggest a modern technique. Traces of white mortar are on either face of fragment. On one side remain traces of a rounded flange. The fragment measures 96.1 mm in length, 54.2…

Fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture. Around a quarter of the base of the vessel survives, this rises slightly towards the centre of the upper face. On what would have been the inside of the vessel are what appears to be the letter M or W - the makers mark. There may have been other letters, though these are now illegible. The small size of the fragment makes it had to determine the shape of the original vessel. However, given its shape it may possibly belong to a plate or dish of Dragendorff form 15 to 31, dating to the mid 1st to m…
