Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint lithic implement of Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC) in the form of a scraper. The scraper is struck from a tertiary flake and retains no original cortex. The dorsal surface exhibits four parallel negative flake scars and invasive, sub-parallel, low angle retouch over c. 50% of its surface towards the distal end. The ventral surface exhibits a small, low bulb of percussion and some irregular flake removal. The scraper has been recorticated due to long term burial in a chalk environment, and is white-grey in colour. The scraper measures 40.60mm in length, 65.01mm…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of flint debitage of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 7000 - 3500 BC) in the form of a flake. The flake is struck off a tertiary flake and retains no original cortex. The dorsal surface exhibits two parallel negative flake scars from previous blade removal. A small striking platform is present at its proximal end. The ventral surface exhibits a small, low bulb of percussion but no conchoidal ripple marks are present. Retouch is in the form of invasive, abrupt, parallel flake removal from one of the negative flake scars on the dorsal face. The flake has been recorticated due to…

The dorsal surface exhibits three parallel negative flake scars from previous blade removal. A striking platform is present at its proximal end. The ventral surface exhibits a low bulb of percussion but no conchoidal ripple marks are present. There is perhaps evidence of short, stepped retouch towards its distal end. An incomplete Neolithic (3500-2100 BC) polished flint adze or axehead, with an asymmetric section, measuring 80.26x51.81x26.40mm and weighing 98.72g. The flint is heavily patinated and an off-white in colour, with a brighter white showing through the flake removal scars. In shape the axehead has a curved cutting edge (51.81mm wide) and one steeply angled surviving edge (the other is missing), so it looks rather triangular in shape and probably was originally not much long than it is now. In cross-section, the axehead is D-shaped, having a pronounced curve to one face while the other…
