Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan. It is decorated unifacially; the lower face is marked and worn but seemingly only as a result of old damage. The upper face features a design rendered in relief. It may represent a figure advancing right with a staff, or, the other way up, perhaps the Roman numerals 'III' or the letter 'IN', below which a pair of 'C' shapes and a transverse line. At 47.7g it is equivalent to around one-and-a-half troy ounces, or around one-and-two-thirds ounces avoirdupois. Biggs and Withers (2000, 24-26) features two round flat wei…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy T-shape Roman brooch. The leg, catch-plate and pin have been lost. The wings are circular in cross-section. The length across them is 24.35mm. At one tip there is a transverse incision on the upper surface; the other tip has been abraded away uppermost. The wings are below the head which turns through a right angle to begin the bow which then continues to slope downward, attaining the level of the wings by the point of the (old) break. At the junction of the wings and the head is a diagonal moulding flanked by grooves. Within the pin slot are the vestig…

The double pierced lug is situated behind the head as is characteristic of this type. The axis bar, chord and sprung pin are all missing. The wings are curved, up to 6.3mm wide and extend for c. 11mm on each side of the head. They both have an incised transverse line towards the tip; the tips themselves are both abraded, one more than the other. The broken bow is plain with flattened sides and thus a sub-oval cross-section…

A cast copper-alloy incomplete Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.d sub group, flat wing ends type). At the head is one of the characteristic wing tip plate extensions, pierced to take the axis bar; one has been abraded through. The rearward facing lug which protrudes from the centre of the head would have held the chord of the spring mechanism. The semi-cylindrical wings that cover the spring and have tips that rise slightly to form a ridge. There is a further ridged moulding to each side of the head. The bow is semicircular in cross se…

A cast copper-alloy Roman T-shaped brooch of initial type dated to later 1st to mid-2nd century AD. The brooch survives quite well, only having suffered some post-depositional damage and the loss of its pin. The head has tubular wings, each with a terminal ridge. There is a further ridge either side of the wide head. The axis bar is largely obscured by the wings, but would appear to be made from iron judging by orange corrosion product both at the wing terminals and within the pin slot. The pin is missing. The upper bow emerges from the wings initially at a width of c. 13.1mm before t…

A slightly corroded bowl from a probable Roman cast copper-alloy spoon (6.2mm deep). The bowl is pear shaped in form, making it a Type 2 spoon in Crummy's (1983, 69) classification. It is plain with some abrasions to the rim and some accretions and losses of patina as a result of corrosion. At the narrow end are the vestiges of the junction with the handle, triangular in cross-section. The artefact has a variable grey-green patina with the corrosion product coming through light green. The bowl can be compared with one illustrated in Crummy (1983, 70; ref.: 2012).

A complete cast copper-alloy pin of probable Roman date. It has a biconical head (max. dia.: 11.2mm), with a groove below at the junction with the shank. The shaft below the groove is slightly expanded/everted (Dia.: 4.7mm). The shaft is circular in cross-section with a central swelling (Th.: 4.0mm). The tip has been bent to one side, first shallowly, then through ninety degrees. As Geake (2001, 39) notes, both Roman and Middle Saxon pins can have swellings on their shafts and can be bent; they are therefore difficult to tell apart. Although early-medieval pins often have collars the…

A damaged cast copper-alloy Roman bow-and-fantail brooch, incomplete in that it is missing its pin. At the head is an integral circular chain loop, bent downwards as a result of old damage. Below is a plain tubular crossbar (W.: 14.05mm) which housed the axis bar. Orange-brown corrosion product at the terminals and around the pin slot suggest that the axis bar was made of iron. The pin would have hinged around the bar in the central longitudinal slot. The head tapers into the bow which is reeded, with a central longitudinal ridge within a border. At the foot the expanded triangular …

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman brooch, probably best classified as a trumpet derivative. The fragment consists of the head, upper bow and integral chain loop; the rest of the brooch is missing. The chain loop, which would have been sub-circular, has been largely truncated as a result of old damage. There is a pair of transverse ridges at its junction with the head.
