A late post-medieval/ modern circular lead weight measuring 16.7mm in diameter, 8.4mm in thickness and weighing 16.28g. It has damage in several places to the high sides, which in turn has caused damage to both faces. One face reads RIPPINGIL[...] around the top, the lettering around the bottom is lost due to wear. The other face reads [RI]PPINGILL[E]'S around the top and PA[...]T. around the bottom. The inscription on both faces can perhaps be interpreted as RIPPINGILLE'S PATENT and be related to Rippingille's Patent stoves. Taken from Royal Museums Greenwich (http://collections.rmg…

A corroded cast lead weight, probably a pan weight of post-medieval date. The weight is circular in plan with some bevelling and abrasions from the smaller upper surface to the larger lower. It is decorated on its upper face with a cross in relief dividing the surface into quarters. Incised finely on the flat lower surface is a pair of keys in saltire (cross keys). This device is found on a number of artefacts recorded on this database, all of post-medieval date; the keys are of this style. Through the keys is a vertical incision, with traces of a transverse incision and possible bord…

A cast gunmetal (copper-alloy) circular trade weight of post-medieval date. The weight has a circular rim, c. 4.6mm thick, and a circular groove towards its centre. The lower surface has a punched central circle within a circular depression; the zone beyond is covered with file marks. The sides are shallowly bevelled, with the rim slightly wider than the base. The upper face is stamped with an initial 'G' surmounted by a crown (at c. 3 o'clock), a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights) (at c. 6 o'clock), an 'A' (for avoirdupois) (at 9 o'clock), the sword of St Paul (for t…

A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan. It is decorated unifacially; the lower face is marked and worn but seemingly only as a result of old damage. The upper face features a design rendered in relief. It may represent a figure advancing right with a staff, or, the other way up, perhaps the Roman numerals 'III' or the letter 'IN', below which a pair of 'C' shapes and a transverse line. At 47.7g it is equivalent to around one-and-a-half troy ounces, or around one-and-two-thirds ounces avoirdupois. Biggs and Withers (2000, 24-26) features two round flat wei…

A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (17th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 1.7mm) on its upper surface. Within is a punch at the centre of a flat field. Around this are numerous fine concentric lines from the manufacturing process. Punched within the rim at around 1 o'clock is the sword of St Paul (for the City of London). At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at around 12 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'C', denoting King Charles, although one cannot distinguish betwee…
