An incomplete lead-alloy medieval ampulla, missing it neck and broken just above the rounded bottom half. The break is old and the ampulla is a little squashed. The ampulla is decorated on one side with a quatrefoil design, each foil or petal with a central longitudinal raised rib and between each petal a narrower pointed 'leaf' without rib decoration. The other face is decorated with a raised circular rib within which is raised cross-hatching and a central letter 'I'. Spencer (1990: p62, no. 144) suggests that the 'I' may represent Our Lady of Ipswich (as 'W' is believed to represen…

A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The artefact is flask-shaped, with a rounded, sub-circular lower chamber. The upper half is broadly rectangular, seemingly expanding slightly at the top. The top has suffered extensive losses on both sides and the suspension loop/handle lugs are now missing. Level with them is a puncture through one face. Below this the lower chamber is depressed diagonally across most of its surface. The open end has been crimped shut, to contain the holy water that would have originally been held within. The ampulla has s…

A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The remaining part is the rounded flask, with its sub-circular lower chamber. The ampulla is decorated bifacially on the lower chamber. On both sides is the same motif of a crowned? heart with fine cross-hatching within a linear border (it is possible that there is a crown on the other side). This motif, or similar, has been found on ampullae found in Salisbury (Spencer 1990, 91; ref. 186), London, Maltby Springs, Lincs., and Brandon in Suffolk (ibid., 60; ref. 132), and in many other locations besides (the…

A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The artefact is flask-shaped, with a rounded, sub-circular lower chamber. The upper half is broadly rectangular, seemingly expanding slightly at the top (W.: 21.2mm). The top has suffered extensive losses on both sides. The suspension loop/handle lugs are now both vestigial. Level with them is a puncture through one face, which, on the other, extends to a large loss to one side. Below this the lower chamber is depressed with a central puncture. The ampulla is decorated bifacially on the lower chamber. On one…
