Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A silver thimble of post-medieval date, c. AD 1660-1669. This squashed and now incomplete thimble is of two-piece composite construction, formed of a main piece of silver sheet, once curved to create a flared cylinder; the shallowly convex dome (crown) that would have surmounted it is now missing. The main body is virtually squashed together and slightly twisted. A background pattern of adjoining annulets arranged in columns fills the field above a lower band. The band is defined by a ropework/cabled border above and below. On one of the main surfaces, starting around the cen…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An extremely worn copper alloy trade token dating from AD 1600-1800.
The token is circular and slender, badly worn so that the designs can no longer be read. One side appears to have multiple lines of capitalised text, possibly suggesting a fairly late date and relationship to an apothecary's token, rather than the earlier more stylised designs.
Measurements: 16.9mm length, weight 0.82g.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount in the form of a lion couchant modelled in relief on the front face but flat on the rear face. The front face has a slightly melted appearance as though a blob of metal has been dropped on it, with consquent loss of some decorative detail. The front paws are placed together beneath the mouth and there is no other creature pinned down beneath them, as is normal in leonine knife handles and figurines (e.g. BH-2159D4 and SWYOR-F1D5D6). To what other object this piece was fixed is unknown.

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published
A complete cast lead alloy late medieval pilgrim badge depicting Saint Giles, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1300. The badge consists of a rectangular plate with a sub-circular sewing loop projecting from each corner. A further large sub-circular projection at one short end accomodates the halo'd head of the saint, who is depicted standing, bearded and tonsured with his head within a beaded halo. The saint holds a crozier in his left hand and with his right is obscured but is probably raised in blessing (by comparison to other examples). The base of the saint's vestments are fil…

Object type: RIBBON
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A folded fragment of gold strip or ribbon, dating to the Bronze Age c. 2350-800 BC. The ribbon is rectangular in plan and made from a beaten sheet of gold. It has been folded or bent out of shape in several locations. One surface of the ribbon is decorated with thirteen regular, longitudinal, incised grooves, creating ridges. The exterior longitudinal edges are slightly thicker than the internal ridges, creating a border to the band. Both terminals appear to have been cut leaving a straight edge. The longitudinal edges have likely been smoothed, as they are rounder when compared w…

An uninscribed base silver Iron Age stater of the Durotriges, South Western region, dating to the period c.65 BC - AD 45. The coin is of the "Cranborne Chase" type.
The obverse shows a pattern that was originally based on a stylised head (possibly of Apollo), although the design has 'devolved' into something more abstract. There are three crescent shapes on the obverse. The rest of the design has worn away. The reverse shows a stylised horse with two disjointed legs and five pellets above it; also, a larger pellet below, which is very w…

A worn uninscribed copper-alloy Iron Age stater of the Durotriges, South Western region, dating from c. 65 BC to AD 45. The coin is of the "Cranborne Chase" type. Due to wear, the shape of the coin is sub-triangular - like that of a shield. On the obverse, all that remains is a vertical pin shape that covers almost half the surface, with a wide crescent above it and another narrow crescent shape to the right of this. Near the bottom right hand edge of the obverse, are a group of worn pellets. On the reverse, much of the surface is covered by very worn pellets r…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published
A gold finger ring with diamond setting dating to the medieval period.
The ring has a square bezel the front of which rises evenly in a four sided pyramid the top point of which is formed by the four sided diamond embedded in the bezel. The diamond is probably a natural octahedra crystal and appears slightly grey in the setting. The four facets on the front of the bezel have horizontal striations from filing/hammering and are even in plane with the sides of the diamond. The sides of the bezel curve backwards, narrowing from the front to the flat back.
The bezel connects directly int…

County: Dorset

An early medieval strap link of Anglo-Scandinavian origin, dating to AD 1000-1100.
The link is composed of two circular loops, one of which is filled in with iron corrosion. They form the terminals of a pair of arms which are D-shaped in profile, and are joined by a raised circular central boss. The two loops have bevelled edges.
According to Williams, 'Anglo Scandinavian Horse Harness fittings' (2007, p1), these harness links are Anglo-Scandinavian in origin and derive from the Viking Ringerike style, as seen on examples where the boss is a distinct…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy annular buckle dating to the late medieval period, c. AD 1400-1650.
The buckle frame survives, the pin is missing. It is double looped, with both loops crescentic in shape. The frame is rectangular in cross section with a bevelled inner edge. The central bar is trapezoidal in cross section. It has two subtle depressions in the outer edge of the right hand side of the frame, which may be caused by post depositional damage or may be deliberate.

An incomplete copper alloy buckle dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1500-1700.
The buckle frame is damaged, with c. 30% missing. The central bar survives in good condition as does the remainder of the bar. It is double looped, with each loop D-shaped. There are two protruding knops at each end of the central bar, and a further two knops placed at the point at which the buckle frame turns from horizontal to vertical. The tight rounded nature of the loops suggests a relationship to earlier "spectacle" style buckles while the addition of the knops is character…

A cast copper alloy pot leg dating to the post medieval period, c. 1500-1750.
The leg is D-shaped in cross section with a flat back and a convex front. It has three conjoined convex ribs on the outer face, evenly spaced apart and very shallow. Above the ribs is a raised fetlock which runs horizontally across the outer face. The break is directly above this fetlock, but the ribs continue above it up to the break, and survive in better condition here.

The leg is triangular in section and rectangular in shape, the triangular sectional appearance is caused by a tall central midrib which extends downwards in the centre of the object.
