Object type: DRESS PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete silver gilt dress pin. The silver head is hollow and spherical and decorated with silver wire filigree and raised bosses. A thicker flattened strip of silver divides the head into two hemispheres. At the top there is a cylindrical knop which gives the appearance that the shaft goes through the head. The shaft survives to its pointed terminal- it is circular in cross section, tapering to a sharp point. It is bent to just above 90 degrees, probably as part of post depositional damage. There is a circular loop just where the head and shaft of the pin join. Each hemisphere i…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age or Roman mount dating to the period c. 300BC - AD 100. It is possibly a decorative shield clip, although it has also been suggested that this type of mount derives from a bucket, tankard or vessel. As this example contains remnants of iron decay in its interior, it has been suggested that it may originate from a bucket style vessel, akin to those of the Aylesford Swarling type (J. Ahmet pers.comm). It is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy which is now tubular in shape. It has a series of curving ridges which give it a sligh…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy buckle of the "spectacle" type dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1350-1500. The pin is missing, but the frame survives. The frame is double looped, with two pointed oval loops which are convex in cross section. The frame is noticeably pointed at the upper and lower terminals, emphasising the pointed oval shape of the loops. There is also a thickening on the left hand loop to give the appearance of a pointed quasi-knop. NCL-B49FBD is similar, as is CAM-9CE780. Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle (page 53, No.294) which he dates to c.135…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a blade, possibly from a dirk or rapier, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1200 BC. The fragment is sub-triangular in shape, and is from near the point of the blade. It is broken just at the tip, and where the blade would have continued to the hilt. It is lozengiform in cross section, but the central midrib is markedly higher on one side than another, which is near flattened. The surface is now pitted and a dark greenish black in colour. DOR-772FCD is a similar example on the database, as is NARC-DFA5EB. Measurements: 24.1mm length, 19.9mm width, …

An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting, probably a strap slide, dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1600-1750. The object is loosely rectangular in shape, although it tapers from each end and has three notched scallops in its centre, elaborating on the basic rectangular form. It has two integral lugs, and probably originally formed a square with an undecorated rear frame. A wide variety of these forms are to be found on the database, including LVPL-93EF98, which is a more complete form with the full frame present. Measurements: 31.9mm length, 6.8mm width, 2.2m…

Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete miniature developed T-shaped brooch dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-150. The wings and upper bow survive. The wings are truncated, cylindrical in shape, and with a markedly thick, almost bulging appearance. At their terminals the axial bar is just visible, but the area of the hinge is badly marked by corrosion. In this area may also be the base of a headloop, as the area is so damaged it may represent a break. The bow rises gently from the wings, and its point of attachment with the bar is emphasised by two diagonal lines which flank the central bow, creating …
