A flint core. A single platform bladelet core of irregular shape, but tending towards conical. Made from a piece of dark grey pebble flint with a glossy, mottled blue-white patina. There is some abraded iron-stained cortex remaining. The rest of the "conical" surface is covered in multiple converging bladelet removal scars. The flakes have been removed from a single platform. The edges of the core show signs of deliberate platform edge abrasion. Date: Mesolithic- Neolithic - c. 10000 - 2350 BC Dimensions: 24.91 mm x 32.38 mm x 28.43 mm Weight: 27.98 g

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint pick dating to the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. The tool is made on an elongate sub-cylindrical nodule of weathered, cortical mottled light grey flint. Most of one side of the pick retains thick chalky cortex, the remainder of the surface of the pick is formed by abrupt short flaking with shallow to moderately shallow scars. The butt is relatively flat with a trapezoidal cross-section and the pointed tip is formed around a deep, natural thermal fracture flake scar. The exposed flaking platform edges appear to have been deliberately blunted. The exposed f…

A small single platform flint core. Dark grey flint which has a thick white patina and some iron staining. There a wide strip of abraded, beige cortex. bordering the platform and flaked area. There are several numerous small, wide flake removals along one side of the platform. The edge of the platform has been abraded prior to flaking. A rounded flint scraper. Made on a flake from a bladelet core. The flint is dark grey and has a thick, white patina. The flake has a very small striking platform and low bulb of percussion with a large bulbar scar. The distal end has been coarsely and steeply retouched through a remnant of abraded cortex. The dorsal face has numerous small, parallel flaking scars from bladelet production on the original core from which this flake was struck. Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint pick or heavy duty core tool. Crudely flaked to form an irregular trapezoidal to triangular cross-section, the butt end (trapezoidal) is blunt and one area shows impact chatter perhaps indicating use as a hammer or crushing tool. The irregular margins are dressed to blunt them and the tip (which retains an area of worn cortex) is wedge shaped. There is an all over semi-gloss off white patina with dark red brown ferrous staining on some flake ridges. Date: Mesolithic to Neolithic: 10,000-2350 BC Dimensions: 144.1mm x 58.3mm x 40.4mm Weight: 424g

A light grey mottled flaked axe or possible tranchet axe made on nodular flint. Elongate in shape with a mid gloss patina and localised areas of red ferrous staining. There is relatively steep bifacial flaking to form a sub-trapezoidal cross section and moderately straight dressed mid-line edges and opposing central or just off-centre longitudinal spines on the faces. The butt retains thick cortex. At the opposite end steep flakes have been removed resulting in an abrupt, blunt termination. Date: Possibly late Mesolithic to early Neolithic 7000 to 3500 BC Dimensions: 104mm x 48.…
