A pick made on part of a weathered nodule of pale grey mottled flint. The object has an irregular, almost plano-convex cross-section. One face has been flaked all over to a flatish surface, the other has been steeply flaked all along one margin and partially steeply flaked along the other. This face also retains a substantial area of weathered chalky cortex, including on the blunt butt. Both margins have been deliberately battered to blunt them. The tip tapers to a point. On the cortical face there is longitudinal thinning flake scar, struck from the tip end. On the opposite face anot…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flaked flint pick dating to a late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. The pick is made on a thermally fractured fragment of light grey flint nodule with a crude shape and crudely triangular cross section. One end is asymmetrical with a sub-rounded 'burr' to one side, the other tapers to a point which has suffered some post-depositional damage. One face is made by rough and sometimes deep flaking, as is the 'broad' end of a second face. The remaining surfaces are natural thermal fractures. Small areas of cortex remain on the butt and one edge. The exposed flint has a thin blue -wh…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flaked flint pick dating to the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. The pick is irregular and elongate in shape with a crudely triangular cross section along its whole length and all three faces are formed by rough, sometimes relatively deep flaking. All three edges are irregular and deliberately battered during manufacture, one retains traces of chalky cortex. One end tapers to a blunt point which has suffered some post-depositional damage, the other was deliberately truncated to an asymmetrical 'wedge'. The surfaces are mostly mid-gloss and have thin white patination with a…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint pick dating to the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. The tool is made on an elongate sub-cylindrical nodule of weathered, cortical mottled light grey flint. Most of one side of the pick retains thick chalky cortex, the remainder of the surface of the pick is formed by abrupt short flaking with shallow to moderately shallow scars. The butt is relatively flat with a trapezoidal cross-section and the pointed tip is formed around a deep, natural thermal fracture flake scar. The exposed flaking platform edges appear to have been deliberately blunted. The exposed f…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint pick or heavy duty core tool. Crudely flaked to form an irregular trapezoidal to triangular cross-section, the butt end (trapezoidal) is blunt and one area shows impact chatter perhaps indicating use as a hammer or crushing tool. The irregular margins are dressed to blunt them and the tip (which retains an area of worn cortex) is wedge shaped. There is an all over semi-gloss off white patina with dark red brown ferrous staining on some flake ridges. Date: Mesolithic to Neolithic: 10,000-2350 BC Dimensions: 144.1mm x 58.3mm x 40.4mm Weight: 424g

A light grey flint pick or chopping tool. A large core tool made on an elongate flint nodule with heavy, white, chalky cortex which still covers most of the butt of the tool. The flint is grey with a yellowed glossy patina. One end has been worked to create a crude cutting edge by bifacial flaking directed from the tip along the axis of the nodule. Probably Mesolithic: 10000 to 4000BC Dimensions: 195mm x 62mm x 54mm Weight: 717g

A large crudely worked flint pick. The pick is roughly rectangular in shape, tapering slightly at one end. There are several longitudinal flake removals, struck from opposing ends (this has resulted in a thickened area around the middle of the pick). At the narrow end a small amount of striking platform remains and the opposing, wider end has been removed by transverse flaking. The flint has a heavy white patina. This was found on a beach and shows some signs of abrasion. Date: Probably Late Mesolithic to Neolithic - 7000 - 2350 BC Dimensions: 138 mm x 58 mm x 52 mm Weight: 438 g
