A late early-medieval openwork copper-alloy zoomorphic mount, possibly from a strap or horse harness, dating to the 11th century AD. The mount is in the form of an animal's head and is convex on the front and hollow on the reverse. At the mount's upper edge two small, rounded projections are placed in the corners to represent the animal's ears. The animal then has a protruding hemispherical face that has two recessed swirls at the top for the eyes and a flaring triangle in the centre for the nose. Above the eyes are shallowly moulded recurving curls connected…

A complete gilded copper alloy early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) mount. It consists of a circular copper alloy plate (37mm in diameter) with a raised border around the outside of the outer face and raised chip-carved Style II zoomorphic interlace decoration in the centre with a central raised projection (4.95mm). Gilding still covers most of this decoration although some small patches are missing in places. To the reverse are the remnants of three iron projections. Examples with four rivets are often associated with decorative horse harness disc mounts. Similar mounts, also gilded an…

A small copper alloy mount. It is long and narrow with a flat rear and irregular D-shaped cross section. It has two opposing zoomorphic animal heads, pointing away from one another and each slightly hollowed at the rear of the object.. One head forms the terminal of the object and is raised in profile with a pointed snout, indentations for the eyes, a raised brow ridge and rounded ears. The head at the opposite end has its mouth open and from it projects a squared loop with a central circular projection. There is a transverse collar between thehead and the loop. This head faces in the…

A copper alloy early medieval harness mount probably dating to AD 500-600. The mount is roughly rectangular in shape narrowing to the perforated end which is probably the tip and can be seen to have three distinct sections. The widest end which could be seen as the bottom of the object is broadly semi circular with two protrustions at the bottom broadly forming a M, the front face shows evidence of solder. The opposite end artefact, probably the tip, is roughly rectangular and shows evidence of damage along the top left edge, where a corner is missing, the front fact is heavily corrod…

A copper alloy gilded early medieval axe-shaped mount dating to the period c. AD 580 - 620. The mount consists of a trapeziodal panel with steeply curving sides. The narrower edge is straight and the opposing edge is outcurving. The obverse exhibits complex decoration consisting of a pair of grooves divided by a ridge topped with pellets surrounding a triple stranded possibly zoomorphic interlace design which may represent two snakes. There is a possible snake head with open mouth at the top of the mount, seen in profile looking left gripping a loop of the body between its jaws. The r…

A copper alloy gilded early medieval axe-shaped mount dating to the period c. AD 580 - 620. The mount consists of a trapeziodal plate with steeply in-curving sides. The narrowest edge is straight and the opposing wide edge is outcurved. The obverse exhibits complex decoration consisting of an outer border of diagonal ridges forming a cable pattern within which is a double stranded concentric band around a further border of diagonal ridges within which is a single strand line bordering a complex triple strand interlace basket-weave pattern. A small lozengiform silver mount with zoomorphic interlace decoration. The decoration is asymmetrical and comprises two overlapping dog-like beasts, in profile, with their heads at the midpoint of the long axis, facing in different directions. The beasts have spotted hides. The heads, necks and upper forelimbs are well-defined on each, but then the bodies taper to a narrow band before expanding into their more stylised hindquarters at either end of the lozenge. The limbs also taper into narrow bands, which form a complex interlace pattern. The beasts differ from each other in terms of…

A circular gilded copper-alloy mount dating to the early-medieval period, perhaps the 8th or 9th centuries. Gilding survives on the front and on the edge; the flat reverse is ungilded. There is no obvious means of fixing or attachment. The design of the mount is based on a (missing) central setting with three bosses around which are tight, fine-line 'watch-spring' spirals. In between the bosses the spirals expand from lines to flaring chip-carved trumpets; the chip-carving is very bold. Where two flared ends meet there is a possible transverse ridge (the photo is unclear) which is …

A fragment of an openwork mount. Decorated in the Urnes style. The decoration comproses a beast's head terminal with an open mouth and pellet eyes (no ears), a serpentine body and interlacing tendrils. There are several circular openwork apertures. The back is flat. The break crosses four openwork apertures. David Williams (pers.com) has commented that this is coarser in its execution than examples of similar mounts from East Anglia. Date: Early-Medieval Dimensions: 37.79 mm x 20.90 mm x 6.17 mm Weight: 9.96 g

Copper alloy mount or possible pin head. Circular with a central circular hole and silver inlay decoration. The mount is domed around the central hole, making it correspondingly hollow at the back. The decoration is in three main sections, comprising two panels of chip-carved interlace, separated by a narrow (apparently undecortated) panel radiating from the centre to the edge, and a third area containing triple strand decoration, probably a beast. There is an undecorated framing band around the outer edge. The decoration continues over the domed area until a raised, plaine ring which f…

An incomplete circular cast copper alloy mount, probably dating from the eighth century AD. The front of the mount, which measures 42.36 mm in diameter and weighs 5.98 g, is gilded, with the exception of an exterior band, 2 mm in width. About a quarter of the mount is missing. The front of the mount is decorated with four chip-carved fields. One of the pairs of opposing fields share similar designs, and the missing fourth field would have therefore presumably matched the the remaining third field. The matching fields each consist of a symmetrical interlace motif. The other field is dec…

Probable book or casket mount. An incomplete openwork rectangular plate with zoomorphic design. On three sides is a framing band with a rounded lobe halfway along the longest side. This has an attachment hole containing the remains of an iron fixing. Inside the frame is an openwork design of two beasts with three-clawed feet and long tails. They are arranged in reflection of each other, each one raising a front paw and with its tail raised over its back. They both have a projection from their backs joining their tails, possibly representing wings? However, one has its head facing forw…

Copper alloy and enamel disc cut down from a larger object. Sub-circular disc with fields of champlevé enamel in opaque yellow. It has six discrete elements which form a knot style design against a paler, pinkish enamel background (this may have originally been red). There is a small attachment hole near the edge. The back is flat and undecorated. Susan Youngs reports that: "Enamelling requires an edge to the field when the piece is fired: this disc has been cut down in antiquity and possibly pierced for suspension or by a rivet for fixed attachment. The use of angular fields and c…
