Report to H.M. Coroner Potential Treasure of possible Bronze Age pendant from Charminster, Dorset Treasure case: 2006 T380 Circumstances of discovery Found in September 2004 while using a metal detector; it was 'a few inches deep' in a field of stubble. Description A cigar-shaped strip of gold with sub-square terminals. The two long sides are asymmetric, one being more bowed than the other, but this may be due to a stronger buckle affecting the latter. The strip thins to either terminal, but the long edges have marginal lipping from edge finishing. The perforation is…

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy flanged axehead. The axe has a low proto stop-ridge. The cast side flanges are high and straight with curved upper an lower edges tapering to a point at the butt. There is some damage to the butt of the axehead. The blade is short and slightly flared. It terminates in a widely flared, curving cutting edge. The reddish-brown surface patination is even and smooth. It is similar to LANCUM-87FCE0 on the pAS database. Peter Reavill comments that "this relates best with the 'early short-flanged axes of type Cragg Wood (plate 37-38) possibly Variant Savoch in Bburgess an…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint tool, or possibly debitage, made from a brownish grey flake. There have been some small flakes removed to flatten a bulb of percussion on the ventral side. A single dorsal ridge has also been flattened by removal of flakes. There has been micro flaking along both edges and the distal end. At the proximal end, an angled 'tang' has apparently been deliberately left or created - possibly for setting into a shaft? The flint is generally a pale brownish grey colour except for a white inclusion on the dorsal ridge near the proximal end. L25 W11.5 Th4 mm w 0.5g Length 25mm, Wi…

A flint tool - probably a scraper, quite crudely made from a grey flint flake. There is a striking platform and bulb of percussion on the ventral side. Flakes have been removed to create a dorsal ridge which begin at the proximal end but bifurcates before reaching the distal. Both sides and the end show evidence of re working in the form of micro flaking on both the ventral and dorsal sides. The flint is generally grey but varies in shades throughout and includes some very pale inclusions. Length 27mm, Width 16mm, Thickness 5mm, Weight 3g

A flint tool - possibly a scraper, quite crudely made from a greyish brown flint flake. There is a small bulb of percussion and a hint of concoidal ripples on the ventral side which is considerably convex and slightly twisted along its central axis. Flakes have been removed to create a dorsal ridge nearer to one side than the other. The side nearest to the ridge shows evidence of reworking all the way round to the distal end with several flakes removed as well as micro flaking. A notch has bee created very lose to the proximal end. However on the side furthest from the dorsal ridge, n…

A flint tool - possibly a scraper, quite crudely made from a flint flake. There is a bulb of percussion and concoidal ripples on the ventral side. Flakes have been removed to create a dorsal ridge which begin as a Y at the proximal end and join to form a single ridge towards the distal which has been snapped off apparently at a hinge fracture. The proximal end also appears to have been snapped in antiquity as this is now patinated to a considerably lighter shade of grey that the rest of the flint which is generally pale grey with lighter inclusions and a brown inclusion on the dorsal …

A flint tool - possibly part of a blade, possibly debitage, quite crudely made from a flint flake. There is a striking platform and bulb of percussion on the ventral side. Flakes have been removed to create a dorsal ridge which begin as a Y at the proximal end and join to form a single ridge towards the distal which appears to be a hinge fracture. Both edges show some evidence of minor re-working, with a small notch having been created on one side. A flint tool - probably a scraper, quite crudely made from a grey flint flake. There is a striking platform and bulb of percussion on the ventral side as well as a small area of cortex. There is evidence of flakes being removed to create a dorsal ridge, beginning at the proximal end, but finishing before the distal which still retains a layer of cortex. This has been removed only at the very edge of the distal end. Both side edges have been re worked, showing micro flaking, but the dorsal side either side of the dorsal ridge retain areas of cortex which has only been partially removed…

A flint tool - probably a scraper, quite crudely made from a grey flint flake. There is a bulb of percussion and concoidal ripples on the dorsal side with further ripples on the ventral side which is slightly concave. The tool is roughly triangular in shape with the thickest side being almost entirely covered in cortex. The other two sides which taper to edges show evidence of re touching in the form of both flaking and micro flaking. At it's thickest side the flint is quite dark grey, but becomes much lighter towards the distal. There are some still lighter inclusions in places. …

A copper alloy awl or gouge. The awl has a rectangular cross section. It tapers towards both ends from the centre. One side tapers on all four faces and terminates in a sub circular sectioned point. The other side tapers on two opposite sides to produce a wedge shaped terminal. There is a short, wide groove on the upper and lower faces of the terminal, suggesting this may be a small gouge. An incomplete copper alloy side looped socketed spearhead. The tip and upper part of the spear only. There is a broken side loop on either side of the flared, oval sectioned socket.
