An incomplete and broken cast copper alloy looped palstave axe. The axe has broken some time in the past and is in two pieces. There is some damage to the blade and the flanges and septum are incomplete. Only the stub of the side loop remains. The axe has broken acroos the septum just in front of the stop ridges. Viewed at the break it can be seen that the casting was very bubbly, probably causing the weakness that caused the break to occur at this point. The axe has a well defined, rounded stop-ridge on both sides rising at right angles to the septum. The side flanges are too damaged…

An incomplete cast copper alloy looped palstave axe. There is some damage to the blade and the butt end is incomplete. The axe has a well defined, squared stop-ridge on both sides rising at right angles to the septum. The side flanges are high and lozenge shaped, tapering down to the septum at one end and decreasing height to form low side flanges to a point just above the cutting edge on both flat faces of the axe. An small, incomplete copper alloy probable chisel. It has a sub-square cross section (slightly lozengiform) and tapers to a wedge shape at the cutting edge. It is broken at the wider end. It is possibly Bronze Age in date. Two similar vexamples are SOM-256407 and SOMDOR-C4C660 recorded by Dr Naomi Payne.

Fragment of palstave axe, Middle Bronze Age.
A fragment of a palstave axe. A fragment from the butt of the axe . The terminal is rounded and the butt tapers towards it. It has a rectangular cross section. There is a slight projection at the side on one face of the object which is likely to be the start of a flange along the side of the axe.

A fragment of a copper alloy socketed axe. One corner of the mouth only remains. It has a cast stepped collar and a slight internal lip. Fragment shows rib decorations. There is also a possible decorative longitudinal ridge on one face. Late Bronze Age.

Cast copper alloy chisel. A small chisel with a broad, slightly flaring blade and a curving cutting edge. The blade thins towards the sides and to the cutting edge. The tang is rectangular in cross section and sharply narrowed from the blade. It tapers to a point. This object is similar to DOR-BFD933 and SUR-EB0AB6.

A hoard of 197 bronze socketed axes, broken socketed axes and socketed axe fragments. A full catalogue has been produced for this hoard but is not offered here; it is available on request from the Department of Portable Antiquities and Treasure at the British Museum. Rather, the axes, all being similar, are discussed as a group.
All of the axes in this hoard appear to be of Type Portland (Bruns pers. comm), which dates to the Llyn Fawr stage of the Bronze Age (LBA4) (800-600BC) (Needham et al 1997; O'Connor 2007). This type is distributed in…

An incomplete cast copper alloy razor or triangular scraping knife (racloir triangulaire). Probably originally triangular in shape, the main cutting edge and the sides are bevelled to produce a thinned edge. Along the sides there are also cast ridges on both faces. Cast copper alloy flat axehead. The axe has very slight low flanges on both faces. There is a casting ridge along each side. The axe thins and flares out into a broad cutting edge which is slightly bevelled on both faces. It thins and tapers in the other direction to a rounded butt. The body of the axe is slightly thicker to at the centre than it is at the ends. The surface of the axe has several patches of light green corrosion and damage to the cutting edge, sides and butt. A small copper alloy unlooped palstave axe with a very short, flared blade. The cutting edge is crescentic. The axe is undecorated. There is a faint casting ridge along the centre of the sides of the flanges. The flanges are high, with the tops on one side being somewhat more worn and re-shaped than the other side. The blade is somewhat truncated compared to most axes of this type and the axe is smaller than usual overall. A large, very coarsely worked denticulate scraper. Dark to mid grey patchy flint with greyish, mid gloss patina and some iron staining. Worked on a natural flake from a large nodule. The scraper is sub-angular in shape with a large area of stained coretex on the dorsal surface. Two of the four edges have been flaked from the ventral face, with large flakes removed leaving distinct points between them at the working edge. Copper alloy socketed gouge. The mouth of the socket is circular and there is some damage to it. The socket is empty. The gouge tapers towards the cutting edge and has a gently curved sectioned furrow. There is no sign of wear in the furrow, but there is some damage or wear at the working edge. The edge is flattened. Along each side, running longitudinally is a casting line, the sprues of which have been trimmed. The surface of the gouge is in generally good condition, retaining a greyish shiny patina, suggesting a tin component to the alloy.
