French jetton of Tournai. Tower shield of Tournai on the obverse. Fictitious legends on both sides.Dating between 1497 and 1547. This jetton is similar to several published examples but identical to none. In Barnard, The Casting-Counter and the Casting-Board see p.120, no. 64 for obverse design and p.121, no. 65 for the reverse but not the legends. In Mitchiner, Jetons, Medalets & Tokens, the Medieval Period & Nuremberg see p. 238, no. 725 which is the same except that it lacks the towers in the angles of the reverse cross.

Copper alloy jetton. A French jetton, probably of the Tournai mint. The obverse shows the "Chatel Tournois" (the Castle of Tours)design of the town of Tours. No direct parallel found in the references, but similar to Barnard No 28. Barnard explains that the design of the Chatel Tournois varies so that the object on the top of the tower can be a cross, a lis or a crown. Dating from circa 1415 to 1497.

A worn copper alloy shield of France Tournai jeton dating to 15th century AD. Obverse type depicting the Shield of France bearing three lis with star above. Reverse type depicting a triple standed straight cross fleuretty in 4-arched tressure with a star at each angle. The jeton has been folded across its diameter and the surface is worn away on both sides along this seam. The wear is worse on the obverse where a strip up to 5 mm in width has been worn away along the surface. A similar jeton is recorded by Mitchiner M. (1989), p. 225, no. 674.

On the obverse the D punch used on the die was faulty making the letter more like a B. Unlike the common type which has two angled fleur de lis and a trefoil this example has three fleur de lis on the lower part of the shield below the three roses in chief. This jetton has a diameter of 27.97 mm, a thickness of 1.04 mm and a weight of 3.5 g A small circular perforation is visible at around 2 o'clock on the obverse face, which may have been done in order to display the reverse as a pendant. The jetton is preserved in good condition, with an even green patina covering most of its surfaces.
