A cast copper alloy pin of probable Middle early-medieval date. The end of the shaft has broken off and in its current state the pin measures 37mm in length and weighs 2.4g. It has a thirteen faceted polyhedral head with a stamped ring-and-dot motif on each of the four larger lozenge-shaped vertically-set sides. It has no collar and it may therefore possibly be of Roman rather than early-medieval date. However, the design is typically Middle Anglo-Saxon and there are close parallels from Hamwic (Hinton 1996, p. 22, nos. 4/2 and 169/1163).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount or possible pin head. Circular with a central circular hole and silver inlay decoration. The mount is domed around the central hole, making it correspondingly hollow at the back. The decoration is in three main sections, comprising two panels of chip-carved interlace, separated by a narrow (apparently undecortated) panel radiating from the centre to the edge, and a third area containing triple strand decoration, probably a beast. There is an undecorated framing band around the outer edge. The decoration continues over the domed area until a raised, plaine ring which f…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy trapezoidal single looped buckle. The circular sectioned bar is narrower than the frame and recessed from it. The inside edges of the frame are shaped so that they are wider near the bar and narrow half way along the short side. This produces a T-shaped apature along the long edge. There is a large pin which is square at the attachment end then narrowed to a rounded D-sectioned end. It is attached by a loop behind the square element. The loop has a circular piercing. The pin is longer than the width of the frame. The front is decorated with a circular recess at each corner…

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy stirrup strap mount of Williams class A type 5. It has a pentagonal frame with a tapering, elongate point uppermost. There are two 'tendril' round ended projections running along the sides of the point. This joins to form a bar which would have terminated in the apex loop which is missing. The bar is D-sectioned. There was probably line decoration inside the frame but this has been obscured by corrosion. The back is undecorated. There is the stub of the iron spike at the base, in the middle above the flange.

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of sheet copper alloy with an incomplete circular attachment hole. The object appears to have been lozenge shaped with the hole at one of the points. It is decorated on one face with incised curving lines. The back is flat and undecorated. It is possible that this is part of a Medieval belt mount or an Early Medieval dress hook. If it was the latter, the incised lines may have held niello inlay.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete circular cast copper alloy mount, probably dating from the eighth century AD. The front of the mount, which measures 42.36 mm in diameter and weighs 5.98 g, is gilded, with the exception of an exterior band, 2 mm in width. About a quarter of the mount is missing. The front of the mount is decorated with four chip-carved fields. One of the pairs of opposing fields share similar designs, and the missing fourth field would have therefore presumably matched the the remaining third field. The matching fields each consist of a symmetrical interlace motif. The other field is dec…

Probable book or casket mount. An incomplete openwork rectangular plate with zoomorphic design. On three sides is a framing band with a rounded lobe halfway along the longest side. This has an attachment hole containing the remains of an iron fixing. Inside the frame is an openwork design of two beasts with three-clawed feet and long tails. They are arranged in reflection of each other, each one raising a front paw and with its tail raised over its back. They both have a projection from their backs joining their tails, possibly representing wings? However, one has its head facing forw…
